I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC):
● Recognize evaluative word choices to detect biases and propaganda
devices used by the speakers. (EN6LC-IIIb-3.1.12)
B. Objectives:
At the end of this learning activity sheet, you will be able to:
● identify the biases and propaganda devices used by speakers in
advertisements.
● tell whether texts read are biased or not

● determine the types of propaganda devices used by the speakers.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Bias means favoring one person or side over another. It is a tendency or


preference toward a perspective generally seen as “one-sided”. These are
unreasoned judgments and actions of supporting or opposing a particular person or
thing in an unfair way. It is a strong feeling for or against something without enough
reason.

When reading for bias, it is important to know the following:


● Author’s attitude or tone

● Exaggerated or colorful language


● Check out images

On the other hand, propaganda is a concerted set of messages aimed at


influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people. a mode of
communication used to manipulate the opinion of groups to support a particular
cause or belief. Propaganda makes use of devices and tricks intended to influence
someone’s thinking. It seeks to control what people believe that is the ideas they

consider to be true. It promotes ideas as being the only truth and denigrates other beliefs
as plain wrong. Propaganda is always biased and can be negative or positive.

7 TYPES OF PROPAGANDA

1. Testimonial - the use of well-known, respected people


to endorse a product or service. The testimony of the
famous actor creates a big influence to the customers
or buyers.

2. Glittering Generalities - the act of referring to words or ideas that evoke a

3. Transfer - the act of relating something or someone we like or respect with a
product; symbols are constantly used in this propaganda

4. Plain Folks - the use of everyday people to sell

5. Bandwagon - attempts to persuade the target audience

6. Name Calling - the use of names that evoke fear or hatred in the viewer;
technique that links a person, or idea to a negative symbol. It carries a
negative connotation as it describes and compares its rival product.

7. Card Stacking - the strategy of showing the product’s best features, telling half-
truths, and omitting or lying about its potential problems.

III. ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Tasks
TASK 1: PICK-A-BOO
Directions: Read the advertisement below that used several biases and
propaganda. Pick the statements that show bias or propaganda. Write the number
in the space provided below.

you’ll have little to show for it. Do not try to save at home. The chances are you will
