ACTIVITY 16

1. Why did Rizal change from one favoring assimilation to one favoring separatism
(Abandonment of assimilation)?
 Rizal initially supported assimilation but later advocated for separatism,
recognizing the Philippines' inability to stand on its own. He called for improved
education, management, security, and representation for his people and their
property.

2. What were the personal and other situations which were responsible for this shift?
 Rizal believed that education was crucial to prevent a revolution from taking
place in the Philippines, as the nation was not yet prepared for such an event. He
was concerned that a revolution would seriously affect the country and its people.

3. Did Rizal totally embrace the concept of separation? Why?

 It is possible that Rizal understood that the Philippines and its people were not
yet prepared for separation from Spain. This is perhaps why he advocated for
equal opportunity, as it provided the best chance to demonstrate to the
Spaniards that we had value. Although he did not support the revolution, Rizal
still inspired the Katipuneros at the time. His works and writings served as the
catalyst that sparked the revolution. Rizal devoted his life to serving his country,
and his publications and other works served as evidence of his admirable
reformist actions.

4. Were the Spaniards and the friars totally responsible for the suffering of the tenants at
Calamba? Why?
 The friars have raised the annual rent to a point where it has become difficult for
the tenants to save for payment. Instead of decreasing it, they have raised it
even higher. This has given them an excuse to exploit and extort lands and
properties from fellow Filipinos.

5. In what way did the novel El Filibusterismo reflect the condition of the Philippines at
that time?
 The novel provides a compelling portrayal of the Spanish people as entirely
malevolent. Its impact on the Filipino population has been significant, inspiring
them to take action for justice.
6. Make a reflection paper about the novel "El Filibusterismo" on the past situation of
the Philippines.
-Spanish colonization greatly impacted our cultural identity. El Filibusterismo and Noli
Me Tangere have subplots that add depth to the stories. Rizal ensured that his novels
were relatable to Filipinos.
As a Filipino student of the 21st century, "El Filibusterismo" holds a significant place in
my heart. This novel vividly depicts the past of my country and the unjust, oppressive
treatment that the powerless endured. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices
that our ancestors made to secure our freedom, a topic that still resonates with us
today.
This novel takes us on a journey through the past, encouraging us to learn from our
ancestors' mistakes. It contains essential information that makes it an outstanding
masterpiece, opening our minds to real-life situations.
