the features making the virtual creation appealing is the technology that has been developed behind

the product. As mentioned in 1:53 in the text, "computer graphic generated imageriy is used over
real world object, directly through the eye". This elevates the availability of technology to a level
where immersive connections can now come from the 'human eye' rather than a device. The second
feature is the diversity within the product, where one can customize endless number of companion
creations. Meaning one can design their companion based on their comfort level, making interaction
more pleasing and entertaining.

Between 2:37- 3:06, the author has made used of "non diagetic sound", as there is a shift in sound,
making it more gloomy, buzzing, llow pitched and guilt driven. This is to show the downside of the
'strange beasts' device through excess computerization, the man instructing his characters. Which
clearly hinders real life human connections and relationships. Or even hinders the idea of being a risk
taker by stepping out of the comfort zone to talk to a diversity of people. Rather, it is computerized
and fantasized in a way that escapes one from real world family connection at home. This makes the
audience feel guilty over the state at which the society is heading towards for home entertainment,
without family connection.

1a) The author has used a diversity of perspectives to propogate the idea of human response to
technology, Through various reactions, the author is able to show the perception of amusing
therapists for people, bringing up a universal idea that peoples attitudes towards robots, (an
immense part of the future) differ based on their expressions, cultural beliefs and their personality
and characteristics.

1b) This line is used in a rather witty manner, that makes there connection come across in a rather
romanticising manner. It clearly showed that the unresting comments by Olivia and Fionna ( with
regards to the robot) came across rather disturbing and bothersome to Gemma, who according to
the author had a 'robot crush'. And felt strongly sympathatic towards the robot for the human
reaction towards it. Hence, the departing of Olivia and Fionna came to a great relief to Gemma, who
could spend more time with the robot. "Cradle her beloved" is used to wittily show Gemma's
affection, which brings a rather light hearted mood amongst the audience, bringing a sense of
comfort and cuteness.

C&C- Representation of artificial human companions;

Text 1 is an excerpt from "learning to love"by reporter Patricia Marx, who investigates how humans
interact with robots. The purpose of this is to potray the adaptation of a robot around a human
environment, and how different people respond to that. Furthermore, the target audience of this
excerpt is the youth, the upcoming generation who attempt to explore the impact of a robots
behaviour based on the reactions. Which attempts the majority of the youth population over
common 'perceptions' about artificial human companions which holds debate over its feasibility in
the future. Text 2 is a video titled "strange beasts", that has brought an elevation towards "home
entertainment" with the idea of a computer graphic generated companion that replaces the objects
in the real world directly through the idea. The purpose of the director to potray this is to provide a
visionary future for interaction, to augment interaction. Overall, both the videos have
representented such artificial human companions as 'emotionally interactive tools', however the
human reaction towards such ideas have differed throughout the 2 texts. Which can be brought up
through authors choices of literary elements and cinematography techniques.

In text 1, the purpose of these artificial human creatures is solely for interactions. This is shown
through rule of 3 by the author, when it mentions "creatures are ment to amuse, console and fill in
as surrogate therapist". Thtough this, the word 'amuse' suggests the purpose of the robot is to
entertain people, and 'therapists' is acting as one to sympathize with human struggles and feelings,
and uplift them. This adds a rather warm hearted tone towards the audience, and make them feel
intrigued and excited with the prospect of artificial human companions. Also, when it says "swishes
its flippers, and bats it eyelashes, responding to the sound of his name, being moved". In this, the
author has used visual imagery to provoke audience into visualizing the robots actions and
characteristics. When it says "responding to the sound of his name". This builds on the interactive
trait of the robot, that is to comprehend the human language, and communicate back to them.
Further building on to the endearing atmosphere , with the playful nature of the 'baby robot'. Hence
representing as a friend attempting to help humans through tough times, and entertain during the
happier ones. Similarly in text 2, Victor Weber constructed the concept of 'strange beasts' for the
purpose of human interaction, in order to elevate 'home entertainment'. This is shown through a
close up shot in 0:55 when said "I want to feel part of it, I want to feel real". Through this, he is
tapping upon his emotional and personal desires, that creates a sense of relatability for the
audience, and sympathize with his words. Hence persuading the audience that the intention of the
product is to feel inclusive, which comes through interaction. Similarly, in 1:23 through a camera
dolly shot, the director has shown the 'creature' running around to catch the ball. Showing the
playful nature of the creature, and the ability of the creature to respons to human actions. Hence
building up a delightedl tone& warm hearted atmosphere amongst the audience, enabling them to
find the physical abilities and traits of the robot rather affectionate. Again, through these traits and
abilities, the interaction feature of the robot can be evident, with purpose to entertain and uplift
people at home. Thus both the texts representing these artificial human creatures as 'interactive'
tools used to uplift the moods of people, and entertain.

Next, the human response towards the representation of artificial companions has differed in both
the texts. In text 2, the outlook of humans towards the companions is more positive and adaptative.
This is shown through a long shot angle in 3:54, where the person is comfortabely sitting in a park
bench and interacting with his companion friends. Through the relaxed body language and the happy
expression, the enthusiasm towards interacting with the companions can be viewed. In 4:04, when
he said "we could check out the science museum". This already shows the high engagement of the
person with the technology, and the devotion during that moment. This shows that text 1 is
potraying the idea of a stronger and immediate human connect with artificial companions. Which
persuades the audience to view the product in an exciting and revolutionizing manner. Furthermore,
the fact that the person is able to engage with the companion in a public area, knowing that only he
can see them and others cannot, is a testamenet to his adaptation, and high comfort level. Thus
representing a human response that is adapting, shows excitement and comfort. However, text 1
showcases peculiarity and a discomforting reaction towards the presence of the robot. For instance,
when Sarah says "remind me of the friends I don't have". This contributes to a rather melancholic
mood as it attributes towards loneliness due to the lack of human companionship. The author has
used this to remind the audience that artificial companionship cannot replace human interaction due
to the guilt and non natural connection they will always leave behind. Furthermore when Fiona
labelled it as 'creepy', it shows signs of difficulty and unease in accepting the prospect of a robot to
be a friend, as the concept is something completely new and unique. Thus, showcasing a negative
reaction by characters like 'Fiona' and 'Sarah' to show the complex relationships and differences
between the human and non human entities, and conveys the narrative of human interaction being
irreplacable.

Overall, both the texts have potrayed the represented artificial human companions to elevate
interaction, for entertainment purposes for humans. Text 1 has potrayed that through visual
imagery. Text 2 on the other hand has made use of film techniques like camera dolly to showcase the
playfulness of the companions to boost home entertainment. However, as much as both the texts
have represented these products as helpful entities to human well being and emotions. Only text 1
triggers a positive human reaction of an uplifted, excited and an adaptated person. Hence enabling
the author to convey a positive roadline for home entertainment. Whereas text 2 showcase unease,
discomfort and depressing reaction of humans, due to its uniqueness. Hence leading a narrative that
human interaction cannot be replaced by aritficial companions due to the unnatural connection
humans and technology bring up.
