1) Puns

Evaluation: The reddit user played with the word “flies” and “zoom” to create a humorous
effect, which produced a pun. The user exploited the word “Zoom” that has two different
meanings in this context. Firstly, “Zoom” carries the meaning of to move or travel quickly,
which is related to how fast the year flies. The second meaning of “Zoom” is the video
conference app that is used worldwide for online classes when the global pandemic
happened in 2020. The sentence makes sense to the reader as they understand the double-
meaning behind it.

2) Repetition

Evaluation : The chocolate box that is sold by the online store has the writing “Every Day,
Every Night, Every Moment, I miss you” on it. We can clearly detect the repetition of the
word “every”. “Every” is repeated in front of the phrase which makes it an anaphora. It is
deliberately repeated at the first part in order to achieve an artistic effect that can attract
potential buyers.
3) Simile

Evaluation: The reddit post shows a gif of an interviewer trying to “attack” Jackie Chan to see
how his response will be. The user used the simile “as fast as lightning” to describe Jackie
Chan’s speed and movement. Jackie Chan’s reflexivity is being compared to lightning which
is known as a high-speed light. This indicates that Jackie Chan’s response was super quick,
that it caught the interviewer off guard.
4) Oxymoron

Evaluation: The twitter user joined two opposite ideas to create an oxymoron that produce
an amusing impact. “Act naturally” is an oxymoron as it combines a noun, that is “act” and
the adverb, “naturally”. These two words have contrasting meaning because if a person is in
their natural state, they will not try to act like it. In this case, the tweet portrays how Tom
Holland’s dad are struggling to control his excitement when Emma Watson approaches.
While trying to act calm, the grin can be clearly on his face.

5) Alliteration

Evaluation: The words “Create”, “Calm”,” Clutter”,” Consider”, and, “Color” have the same
first consonant sound and they occur really close in the series. This means that the title of
the article contains alliteration. The use of alliteration in the article makes the title and
content appear appropriate together. This is because the article talks about organisation and
the consistent sound of the consonant makes the title seems “organised” as well.
6) Hyperbole

Evaluation: The user @abbeeJR exaggerated when expressing his sadness about the last
Avenger movie. “My world collapsed” is a hyperbole because it helps to emphasize the
user’s feelings, but it is not exactly the truth. The user’s world did not literally collapse and
destroyed because of the movie. However, it certainly shows how impactful the movie was to
person’s life. The movie successfully captivates the user’s emotion to a great extent, hence
the exaggerated expression which leads to hyperbole.
7) Pun

Evaluation: Tan Ming Wai played on the word “smashing” to create a pun as “smashing” in
this context gives two different meaning. “Smashing” was to describe the chief,Dato’ Lee
Chong Wei, a renowed sportsperson. The first meaning of smashing here is excellent and
wonderful. Dato’ Lee Chong Wei was looking forward to be the chef de mission (CDM) of the
national contingent to the Olympics and he was expected to do a great job as the chief.
Besides that, Tan Ming Wai choice of words gives a humorous effect as “smashing” is a
popular jargon in badminton which means to bring down the shuttle from a high angle.
8) Onomatopeia

Evaluation: “Bang” is an onomatopoeia as it imitates the natural sounds of a thing. “Bang”

usually indicates the sound of a sudden loud noise or an explosion. So, this tweet tells us
that the user @lilavys heard a loud noise coming from the kitchen in a more expressive way.

9) Hyperbole

Evaluation: “Never in a million years” is a hyperbole as it an unreal situation to emphasize

the real situation. The thought of finishing the race has never cross marathon runner’s mind,
but it does not really take a million year for that to happen. The funny thing is the runner is
40 years old. Therefore, clearly, “never in a million years” is just an exaggeration.
10) Personification

Evaluation: The user @MissAshaPhilip used personification in her tweet by giving a non-
human object human attribute. The bed has been personified, as it was given it the ability by
Asha Philip to call her to lay on it. It might be a lazy day for Asha Philip, and she was not
feeling productive. By just looking at her bed, she was tempted to laze around. As an
excuse, she pretended that she was being called by her bed and she needed to answer the
“call” and gave in into temptation.
11) Simile

Evaluation: The existence of simile can be clearly seen on the headline that was written Dr
Chen Tai Ho as he used the word “like” in comparing the face to the moon’s surface. Dr
Chen was writing about acne that can leave a mark in the form of scars. On the other hand,
the moon is also known to have abundance of craters which also leaves a “mark” on the
moon’s surface. The unevenness of texture and surface of both objects gives them
something in common, and they can be compared to each other.

12) Gustatory Imagery

Evaluation: The reddit post shows a review on a microwavable sweet and sour chicken. The
post contains gustatory imagery as the user describes the flavour and taste of the food, and
it involves the sense of taste. The use of the word “sweet” gave us a clear description on
how the sauce taste like as it appeals to our sense of taste.
13) Extended metaphor

Evaluation: The song perfect two by Auburn is an extended metaphor. Throughout the whole
song the singer is proving their compatibility as lovers to objects that belong to each other.
For example, the line “You can be the peanut butter to my jelly”. Peanut butter and jelly are
known to be a great combination. Similarly, the lovers in the song are made for each other
and they are a good match. The extended metaphor is making a point on how they are
perfect are with each other. Hence, the perfect two.
14) Idiom

Evaluation: “Spice up your day” is an idiom which means to make something more
interesting or exciting. As the movement control order (MCO) strikes a lot of people with
boredom, and the end is nowhere near, Adil Rusli suggested a new genre of movies to be
watched by the readers. The new genre was being recommended to keep the readers
entertain. Instead of using the word “entertain”, Adil Rusli use the idiom “spice up your day”
to spark the readers’ interest into reading the piece.
15) Idiom

Evaluation: “Down in the dumps” is an idiom that means sad or discouraged. The Goalcast
was trying to attract the attention of people who might be feeling down with the help of the
idiom. The Goldcast displayed “10 Inspiring Netflix Movies” that can cheer up the ones who
were having during a difficult time. The use of idiom “down in the dumps” gives a significant
impact as it is more thought-provoking and dramatic rather than just saying “sad”.
16) Metaphor

Evaluation: The “wind beneath my wings” is a metaphor to picture the role of men in Radhika
Roy’s life. The wings themselves does not move the creature. The wind beneath the wings
push them up and help them fly, moving from one place to another. Similarly, the men in
Radhika Roy’s life has lifted her up and kept her moving. This shows the influence of men in
her life and they have been a solid support system by pushing her forward.
17) Pun

Evaluation: The reddit user played with the words “unsharpened” and “pointless” to produce
a humourous effect. The word “pointless” in this context has two meanings. The first
meaning of pointless here is very little or no purpose. The second meaning is the pencil does
not have a sharp point (tip). Both of the meaning makes sense as an unsharpened pencil
has no purpose as it cannot help a person to write something, and the unsharpened pencil
does not have a sharp tip. Therefore, by exploiting the word “pointless” a pun has been
created.
18) Auditory Imagery

Evaluation: A few descriptions in the reddit post appeal to one of the human senses which is
the hearing. Therefore, the post contains auditory imagery. The user stated that the Subway
ride was quiet before the woman came in. The woman broke the silence with the sound of
the show that she was watching on Netflix. Not only that, the user repeated the word “heard”
several times in the post which shows his or her hearing senses were actively involved.
19) Olfactory Imagery

Evaluation: The con side of the hotel review emphasized on the smell of the room. As the
comment pertains to the odours and scents, we can detect the olfactory imagery in the
review. The use of adjective like “pungent” indicates a strong and unpleasant smell from the
room and it helps us visualise and image the condition of the room. It also shows that sense
of smell is being heavily engaged.
20) Visual Imagery

Evaluation: The lyrics of the The Man Who Can’t Be Moved by The Script contains visual
imagery. This is because we can visualise the scenario that is being portrayed in the lyrics.
The description engaged with our sight and it can be physically seen. For example, “Got
some words on cardboard, got your picture in my hand,Saying, “If you see this girl can you
tell her where I am”. Deriving from these two lines we can imagine how was the situation
going.
