Evaluating Functions
(M11GM-Ia-2)
Learning can be both fun and interactive. So we present to you this Learning Material
that will provide valuable understanding of the topic being presented. As a 21st century
learner, this material can be your stepping stone in achieving proficiency in the subject matter.
The elements serve as guides in your learning journey. The contents of this learning
materials, carefully prepared and developed by dedicated teachers from various schools in
the City of San Jose del Monte, provide deeper understanding.

5. The budget of a university organization is split evenly among its
60 000
various committees. A function 𝑀(𝑛) = describes the amount
𝑛
of money each of the n committees would receive, how much
should each of the 8 committees receive?
a. P7 500 b. 48 000 c. 75 000 d. 480 000

4. 𝑥
5. 10z + 4xy – 12
Just like what you did in this recall, today our lesson is also
evaluating expression but more specifically, this time, it is
function. What is evaluating functions?

Example 5. If 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 3, find:
e. 𝒇(𝒙 + 𝟏) Steps to follow
𝑓 (𝑥 + 1) = 4(𝑥 + 1)2 − 5(𝑥 Replace each x with x + 1
+ 1) + 3
𝑓 (𝑥 + 1) = 4(𝑥2 + 2𝑥 + 1) perform the operation indicated
− 5(𝑥 + 1) + 3
𝑓 (𝑥 + 1) = 4𝑥2 + 3𝑥 – 3 Simplify and write the final answer
Evaluating Functions Through Real-Life Situations
A. Function. To evaluate functions, you must represent the real-
life situation first as we have done in the first 2 modules and then
try to evaluate using the given values. Meaning, finding the value
of the output f(x) = y, given the input x.
Example 6. The fee F for hiring a tourist guide is P400 for each
group of 5 persons in hiking to an Eco farm in Doňa Remedios
Trinidad, Bulacan. Represent the cost of hiring tourist guides as
a function of the number of tourists, solve for the cost of hiring
tourist guides for a group of 35 people.
Solution: F (1) = P400(1) because of the 1: 5 ratio of tour guide for
every 5 persons
Therefore, we need to divide 35 people by 5 and we get 7, this is the
number of tour guides to hire. Therefore,
F (7) = P400 (7) = P2,800 is the cost of hiring 7 guides for 35 people
B. Piecewise Function. The process of evaluating piecewise
functions is similar to evaluating ordinary functions, except for the
fact that we need to choose the piece or chunk of function to be
used for a given value of x. We can do this by examining the
appropriate interval where the input or the value of x belongs.
4
Example 7. Given the piecewise function below.
𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 6
ℎ (𝑥 ) = { }
𝑥 + 10 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 6
Find: a. h (4) b. h (10) c. h (6)
Solution:
a. h (4) b. h (10) c. h (6)
4 belongs to x<6 so 10 is in the range 6 is in the range of
we need to use the of 𝑥 ≥ 6, use the 𝑥 ≥ 6, use the
formula formula 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 formula 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥
𝑥 + 10 and and evaluate
evaluate
h (4) = 4 + 10 h (10) = (10)3 + h (6) = (6)3 + 2 (6)
2(10)
h (4) = 14 h (10) = 1,000 + 20 h (6) = 216 + 12
h (10) = 1,020 h (6) = 228
