I. REVIEW (Course Presentation)

(SLIDE 1)
Let us recall the definition of relation and function.

Relations Functions
A relation is a rule that relates values A function is a relation where each element
from a set of values (called the in the domain is related to only one value in
domain) to a second set of values the range by some rule.
(called the range).

relations into their left in their corresponding category on the right.

III. EVALUATING ON FUNCTIONS
Course Presentation
Slide 1:
Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in the function, in this case x , with a
value from the function’s domain and computing for the result. To denote that we are
evaluating f at b for some b in the domain of 𝑓, we write f (b).
To evaluate a function, we should:
 directly replace the indicated value to the given function.
 perform the indicated operation; and
 simplify the answer.
Slide 2: (Note to the content creator: Make this interactive)
Example 1. Evaluate the function f ( x )=2 x−5 if x=3 .
Solution: f ( 3 )=2 (3 )−5
f ( 3 )=6−5
f ( 3 )=−1 Answer
Slide 3: (Note to the content creator: Make this interactive)
Example 2. Evaluate the function g(3 x +1) , where g is as defined in Example 1.
Solution: To evaluate g ( 3 x+1 ) , we need to replace all the x in g ( x )=2 x −5
by (3 x+ 1).
g ( 3 x+1 ) =2 ( 3 x +1 )−5
g ( 3 x+1 ) =6 x+2−5
g ( 2 x +1 )=6 x −3 Answer

Slide 4: (Note to the content creator: Make this interactive)

{
|x−6|, x ≥ 2
Example 3. Given q ( x )= 2
x +4 , x <2
. Evaluate the following:

( a ) f (8)

Solution: With this value, 8 belongs to the condition x ≥ 2. Hence, we will be using the first
function,|x−6|.
f ( 8 )=|8−6|
f ( 8 )=2Answer

( b ) f (−3)

Solution:
Since −3 belongs to the condition x <2, we will be using the secondfunction, x 2+ 4 .
2
f (−3 )=(−3) + 4
f (−3 )=9+ 4
f (−3 )=13 Answer

IV. OPERATION ON FUNCTIONS

Course Presentation (Make every slide an interactive lesson / activity)
Slide 1:
1. Addition of Functions
Let f and g be functions. Their sum, denoted by f +g , is the function denoted by
( f + g )( x )=f ( x )+ g (x).

Example: Let f ( x )=x +1and g(x )=3 x . Find (f + g)( x).

Solutions: ( f + g )( x )=f ( x )+ g ( x )=( x +1 ) +3 x =4 x +1
Note: Combine similar terms.
Slide 2:
2. Subtraction of Functions
Let f and g be functions. Their difference, denoted by f −g, is the function denoted by
( f −g ) ( x )=f ( x )−g(x ).
Example: Let f ( x )=x +1and g( x )=3 x . Find ( f −g)(x).

Solutions: ( f −g ) ( x )=f ( x )−g ( x )=( x +1 )−3 x =−2 x+1
Note: Combine similar terms.
Slide 3:
3. Multiplications of Functions
Let f and g be functions. Their product, denoted by f ∙ g, is the function denoted by
( f ∙ g ) ( x ) =f ( x ) ∙ g( x) .
Example: Let f ( x )=x +1and g( x )=3 x . Find ( f ∙ g)(x).
Solutions: ( f • g )( x )=f ( x ) • g ( x )=( x +1 )( 3 x )=3 x 2+ 3 x
Slide 4:
4. Division of Functions
Let f and g be functions. T Their quotient, denoted by f / g , is the function denoted by

( fg ) ( x )= gf (x)
(x)
, excluding the values of x where g ( x )=0
Example: Let f ( x )=x +1and g(x )=3 x . Find

() f
g
(x)

Solutions: ( fg ) ( x )= gf (( xx)) = x3+1x ; where 3 x ≠ 0

Slide 5:
5. Composition of Functions
Let f and g be functions. The composite function denoted by ( f ∘ g) (read as “ f
composed with g“) is defined by ( f ∘ g )( x )=f (g ( x )). The process of obtaining a composite
function is called function composition.
Example: Let f ( x)=2 x +5and g ( x )=x 2−2 x +3 . Find the following
1.(f ∘ g)(x) 2. (g ∘ f )(x)
Solutions:
1. ( f ∘ g )( x )=f ( g ( x ) ) =2 [ g ( x ) ] +5=2 ( x 2−2 x+ 3 ) +5
