FILIPINO COMPOSERS FOREIGN COMPOSERS

1
Let Us Study
Philippines is one of the countries in Southeast Asia that experienced
colonization from great imperial rulers. The Filipinos way of life, beliefs and
values, and even skills were inherited from them. One of the skills we inherit
for instance, from western people is the compositional techniques which
were patterned by some Filipino composers and even practiced in 20th
century. Hence, these became the strongest foundations of Philippine Music.

CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE MUSIC

According to National Artist Ramon Santos, PhD, “contemporary

music in the Philippines refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and
elements from 20th-century art music in the west, as well as the latest
trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry.”
This contemporary music is defined as music that is currently being
written, recorded, and performed by Filipino Composers. This music is
known as popular music (Pop Music) that was popularized during the 60’s
to 70’s mostly in ballad forms. Filipino composers were able to adopt the
latest trends and musical styles by western country but still, they were able
to maintain the authenticity of their music. They did not choose to be fully
influenced by the Western; they make use of their creativity and expertise in
composing. They composed their songs by the emergence of a new kind of
sound that delivered soulful Filipino lyrics in the medium of Western rock.
They always make sure to be appealing and with a modern approach.
