Spain and then America having colonized
the Philippines from the early 1500s to
the late 1800s, it was unavoidable that
Western compositional techniques found
their way into the works of Filipino
composers. Yet even 20th century
Filipino composers have managed to
retain some traditional elements in
their assimilation of Western
techniques.

CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE
MUSIC
The modern Filipino repertoire consists of
musical pieces that have been written in
20th century idioms that have evolved out
of such stylistic movements as

EXPRESSIONISM.

Social media is filled with people singing
and dancing during social isolation. What
is the power of music for you as a student
to help cope during pandemic?
For musicians and
performers, this is the
perfect opportunity for
them to practice, share
their music on social
media, and use it as a
means to connect with
your friends and
relatives. The good
news is, you do not have
to be musically inclined
to reap the benefits of
music!
Aside from playing a musical
instrument, music listening
in itself releases
endorphins (boost pleasure)
in your system. When
listening to music that you
enjoy, dopamine (happy
hormones), the “feel-good”
chemical and serotonin, the
“happy” chemical is released
in your brain giving you a
sense of pleasure and
boosting your mood.
Music is a great
motivator and music
with a strong beat
will make you want
to move due to a
psychological
phenomenon called
entrainment. This is
why so many people
listen to music
when exercising
and dancing.

Strengthening the Integration of Music

Music is one of childhood’s most rewarding

experiences. It evokes enjoyment,
excitement and personal satisfaction. At
the same time, music demands discipline and
concentration. Children need the
opportunity to experience musical activities
to help develop the physical, emotional,
intellectual, social and aesthetic responses.
