Q6. (a) A large concrete slab thermal diffusivity of 2*10-3 m2/hr, 1m thick has 1-D temperature distribution prescribed as T=10-
20X+20X2+10X3, Where T is temperature and X is the distance from one face towards other face of the wall. What is the rate
of temperature (℃/hr) at the other face of the wall? 4
(b) A furnace is shaped like a long equilateral triangular duct. The width of each side is 1 m. The base surface has an emissivity
of 0.7 and is maintained at a uniform temperature of 600K. The heated left side surface closely approximates a blackbody at
1000K. The right side surface is well insulated. Determine the rate at which heat must be supplied to the heated side externally
per unit length of the duct in order to maintain these operating conditions. 10

Q9. Consider two large parallel plates at T1 =727℃ with emissivity €1=0.8 and other at T2 =227℃ with emissivity €2 =0.4. An
aluminum radiation shield with emissivity €s =0.05 on the both sides is placed between the plates. Calculate the percentage
reduction in heat transfer rate between two plates as a result of the shield. 14
