Text 1

It’s easy to suppose that we all feel the same way about global warming. After
all, everybody wants to save the world. We all want to make a contribution,
however small, and we all do our best. You aren’t one of those people who
wastes water. And I’ m sure you’ve got low-energy light bulbs in your house.
Not everyone is so enthusiastic, of course. Some people wonder what they can
do to help, and don’t really know what to do, until they find out by paying
attention to what the world’s scientists are saying. At least, we all hope this is
true.

Still, there are quite a lot of people who just hope that the problem will go
away. Why do they do this, we might ask. Don’t they want to make a
difference? Their usual response is “We don’t really know whether the climate is
changing”. Well, there’s plenty of evidence of climate change. We know that we
are wasting energy and polluting the planet. It’s all quite simple really. And if
you do know anyone who is still uncertain about whether to save the world or
not, your message to them should be clear. What are you waiting for? If you
think this is just somebody else’s problem, it will, very soon, be your problem
as well.

__ The term “hope” (line 8) is synonymous with expect.

COMENTÁRIO
Guys, parece certa mais não é. Apesar de que ambos, hope e expect, podem
ser traduzidos por esperar... A diferença é bem sutil. É assim: “hope” = ter
esperança e “expect” = ter a expectativa (real) de algo.
Exemplos:
• The Government expects an increase in job offers during the 2014 World
Cup

2) CESPE/ECT/2011
___People all over the world are willing to make a minor contribution to
decrease global warming consequences.

COMENTÁRIO:
Vocabulário importante para resolver a questão.

“…everybody wants to save the world. We all want to make a contribution,

however small,…”

Vamos aos links:

• People all over the world = everybody

• Willing to = want
• A ideia de “decrease global warming” está ligada à “Save the world”
• Global warming = aquecimento global

More than a century after women started campaigning for the right to vote, it
still seems that there aren’t enough women in position of power. In the world as
a whole, there have been very few female heads of state and in some countries
women hold hardly any political power. In industrialized countries where large
numbers of women work, it still happens that men earn two or three times as
much for doing the same job. Although there are a few successful female
business leaders, there are clearly many more men at the top. Many
people believe that this situation reflects the fact that women haven’t got
enough time to be successful in the work place, and in the home. There is too
much pressure on women, they say, to be good wives and mothers, and they
are at a disadvantage in the job market. However, there is quite a lot of
evidence to suggest that women can be more successful in the modern business
environment than men. Many modern business operations now depend on co-
operation and flexibility, and women are better at those skills than men. So it
may well be that in the future, quite a lot of important business will be run by
women, and it will be the men who earn lower wages or stay at home.

regulations. Those employed by the Federal Government may
work as Internal Revenue Service agents or in financial

analysis and administration.
Internal auditors verify the effectiveness of their
13 organization’s internal controls and check for mismanagement,
waste, or fraud. They examine and evaluate their firms’
financial and information systems, management procedures,
16 and internal controls to ensure that records are accurate and
controls are adequate. They also review company operations,
evaluating their efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance with
19 corporate policies and government regulations. Because
computer systems commonly automate transactions and make
information readily available, internal auditors may also help
22 management evaluate the effectiveness of their controls based
on real-time data, rather than personal observation. They may
recommend and review controls for their organization’s

data. Internal auditors may also have specialty titles, such as
information technology auditors, environmental auditors, and

Technology is rapidly changing the nature of the work
of most accountants and auditors. With the aid of special

standard formats of financial records and organize data in
special formats employed in financial analysis. These

with data management and recordkeeping. Computers enable
accountants and auditors to be more mobile and to use their

databases and the Internet. As a result, a growing number of
accountants and auditors with extensive computer skills

A Slow Down for Small Businesses

That is according to a new report released Tuesday by the National Federation

of Independent Business, a trade group that regularly surveys its membership
of small businesses across America.

The federation’s report for May showed the worst hiring prospects in eight
months. The finding provides a glimpse into the pessimism of the nation’s small
firms as they put together their budgets for the coming season, and depicts a
more gloomy outlook than other recent (if equally lackluster) economic
indicators because this one is forward-looking.

While big companies are buoyed by record profits, many small businesses,
which employ half of the country´s private sector workers, are still struggling to
break even. And if the nation’s small companies plan to further delay hiring —
or, worse, return to laying off workers, as they now hint they might — there is
little hope that the nation’s 14 million idle workers will find gainful employment
soon.

If you
think this is just somebody else’s problem, it will, very soon, be your problem
as well.

Late last week, the FCC reported that there was no legal
7 precedent to find fault with Google collecting unprotected
home Wi-Fi data, such as personal email, passwords and search
histories, with its roaming Street View cars between 2007 and
10 2010. However, the FCC did fine Google $ 25,000 for
obstructing its investigation.
The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), a
13 national privacy watchdog, disagreed with the FCC findings. In
a letter sent to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder today, EPIC
asked that the Department of Justice investigate Google’s
16 surreptitious collecting of Wi-Fi data from residential networks.
U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey, a senior member of the U.S.
House Energy and Commerce Committee, has also stepped into
19 the fray.
“The circumstances surrounding Google’s siphoning of
personal information leave many unanswered questions,”
22 Markey said today in an email to Computerworld. “I believe
Congress should immediately hold a hearing to get to the
bottom of this serious situation.”

Government accountants and auditors work in the

public sector, maintaining and examining the records of
government agencies and auditing private businesses and

regulations or taxation. Accountants employed by Federal,
State, and local governments ensure that revenues are received

regulations. Those employed by the Federal Government may
work as Internal Revenue Service agents or in financial

Internal auditors verify the effectiveness of their

financial and information systems, management procedures,

controls are adequate. They also review company operations,
evaluating their efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance with
19 corporate policies and government regulations. Because
computer systems commonly automate transactions and make
information readily available, internal auditors may also help
22 management evaluate the effectiveness of their controls based
on real-time data, rather than personal observation. They may
recommend and review controls for their organization’s
25 computer systems to ensure their reliability and integrity of the
data. Internal auditors may also have specialty titles, such as
information technology auditors, environmental auditors, and

Technology is rapidly changing the nature of the work
of most accountants and auditors. With the aid of special

standard formats of financial records and organize data in
special formats employed in financial analysis. These

with data management and recordkeeping. Computers enable
accountants and auditors to be more mobile and to use their

databases and the Internet. As a result, a growing number of
accountants and auditors with extensive computer skills

A Slow Down for Small Businesses

In the latest sign that the economic recovery may have lost whatever modest
oomph it had, more small businesses say that they are planning to shrink their
payrolls than say they want to expand them.

While big companies are buoyed by record profits, many small businesses,
which employ half of the country´s private sector workers, are still struggling to
break even. And if the nation’s small companies plan to further delay hiring —
or, worse, return to laying off workers, as they now hint they might — there is
little hope that the nation’s 14 million idle workers will find gainful employment
soon.

(A version of this article appeared in print on June 15, 2011, on page B1 of the New York edition with the headline: A Slowdown
for Small Businesses).
