Parallel Fans: If more than one fan will operate in parallel, this box should be
checked. The number of fans in parallel must then be entered. The program will then
check to see if this number of fans can operate in parallel without any of the fans
running in stall. Any fans that do not meet this requirement will not be shown as
valid selections.

will be displayed.

Menu · 15
Limits Tab

The user has a number of choices that will affect the fans that are selected..
The first set of choices in the Performance Limits section, will determine or limit the
speed of the fan. The user may specify 50 or 60 Hz motor speeds. If the fan will have
a variable speed drive, the user can specify the % of line frequency for the fan speed
selection. For example, entering 90% will limit the fan speed to 90% of the nominal
induction speed of the motor. A maximum and/or minimum speed may also be
specified.
The second set of choices in the Fan Diameter Limits section, allows the user to
specify the minimum and /or maximum fan diameters to be considered in the
selection process.

Accessories Tab
The user may select if accessories will be used in ranking the fan selection choices
by price index.

Select
Once the user has made the choices described above, the user would click the Select
button or Select on the menu bar. This will start the program selecting all the fans
that satisfy the given requirements. The bottom half of the Fan Selector window is
revised to show the top five fans, ranked by either price index or power. The user
may toggle between the two lists.

Menu · 16
The user at this point chooses the fan that best satisfies their needs by clicking on the
fan model line. This causes the line to be highlighted indicating the fan that has been
selected. At this time the user may use the other menu options in this window as

Glossary of Terms

Accessories
Optional equipment that may be supplied with a fan, such as inlet bell, outlet cone,
support brackets, etc.

actuator
An electric or pneumatic device that provides the motive force to the controllable
pitch mechanism and therefore controls the blade pitch.

Adjustable Pitch (AP)

Fan rotor design that allows the pitch of the fan blades to be adjusted while the fan is
stationary. The blades are individually and manually adjustable.

Altitude
Elevation above sea level.

Anguline
A mixed flow design with the fan discharge perpendicular to the fan inlet.

annubar
A device for measuring air flow consisting of a velocity sensor mounted in the
straightening vane section of the fan casing.

arrangement
Defines how the fan rotor is mounted and connected to the fan drive, which is
usually an electric motor. It may also refer to whether the fan is installed horizontal
or vertical and whether the fan is supported from the floor or suspended from the
ceiling. Standard AMCA arrangements are as follows:
Arrangement 4 is a direct drive fan with the fan rotor mounted on the motor shaft.

Glossary of Terms · 27
Arrangement 8 is a direct drive fan with the fan rotor mounted on its own shaft and
bearings and connected to the motor through a flexible coupling and connecting
shaft.
Arrangements 1 & 9 are both belt drive fans with the fan rotor mounted on its own
shaft and bearings and connected to the motor through belts and sheaves.

Axivane
Brand name for HBI's vane axial fan.

Belt Drive
A fan arrangement where the fan rotor is connected to the drive motor by belts and
sheaves. With a belt drive fan, the fan speed can be different than the motor speed
and is controlled by the ratio of the fan and motor sheave diameters.

Bi-Flo
Mixed flow fan design with straight through airflow.

blade setting
The blade setting for an Axivaneã fan is a number that specifies the angle of the
blade relative to the hub for a given hub size. Blade settings range from 0 to 24,
depending on hub size, and the lower the number, the higher the blade angle.

CFM
Cubic feet per minute, which is the default unit for fan volume or flow rate.

CompaxTM
Axivaneâ fan with space saving design incorporating an integral outlet cone in the
fan casing. This design is substantially shorter than a standard Axivaneâ fan and
outlet cone.

Concept HV
Controllable pitch fan design that uses a pneumatic positioner and an internal
diaphragm actuator to change the fan blade pitch while the fan is operating.

Connection
The fan connections at the inlet and outlet affect fan performance. Fan performance
for Axivaneã fans is based on total pressure at a given volume flow. If static
pressure is specified instead of total pressure, the effects of the fan connections must
be determined in order to select a fan and predict fan performance. The connection
tab in the fan selector module allows the user to specify the fan connections in this
case. Connection information is not needed if total pressure is specified.

Glossary of Terms · 28
Controllable Pitch (CP)
Fan rotor design that allows the pitch of the fan blades to be controlled automatically
while the fan is operating. The control is either by an external actuator connected to
the fan rotor by means of a lever bar and controllable pitch mechanism or by a
pneumatic positioner and internal diaphragm actuator. The latter design is also
known as a Concept HV design.

Density
Weight per unit volume. For air at standard conditions the density is 0.075 Lb per
cubic foot. (Lb/ft3)

Direct Drive
A fan arrangement where the fan rotor is directly connected to the motor. For direct
drive fans, the fan speed is equal to the motor speed.

Dual Anguline
A mixed flow fan design with two discharges, each perpendicular to the fan inlet.
Discharges may be either 90 or 180 degrees apart.

efficiency
Axivaneã fan efficiency is normally specified as total efficiency, which is the
volume flow * total pressure / 6356 / horsepower.

Fan list
The fan list is a listing of fans currently in the Project database and includes the fan
quantity, tag no., fan model and description.

fan static pressure

Fan static pressure is the difference between the fan total pressure and the fan
velocity pressure. Therefore, fan static pressure is the difference between the average
static pressure at the fan outlet and the average total pressure at the fan inlet.

fan total pressure

Fan total pressure is the difference between the average total pressure at the fan
outlet and the average total pressure at the fan inlet.

fan velocity pressure

Fan velocity pressure is the velocity pressure corresponding to the average velocity
in the nominal direction of flow at the fan outlet.

FPM
Feet Per Minute. Default unit for velocity.

Glossary of Terms · 29
HBI
Howden Buffalo, Inc.

HP
Horsepower. Default unit for fan power.

hub
The component of an Axivane rotor assembly that holds the blades. The available hub
diameters are 14", 17", 21", 26" and 30".

in W.G.
Inches Water Gauge. Default unit for pressure.

Limits
The user has the ability to limit the fan selection to a certain range of fan speeds,
diameters, etc. in the Limits section of Fan Selector. In addition, the program limits
the fan selection to a fan diameter, speed and horsepower that are within the limits of
that particular type of fan. If the user tries to select a fan that is outside of these
limits, the program will not select a fan and the user is advised that “No solutions
available for parameters given”.

Mixed Flow
A fan design that is a hybrid of axial and centrifugal fan designs. The mixed flow
fans by HBI are offered in three configurations; Bi-Flo, Anguline and Dual
Anguline. All three configurations are available in Arrangements 1,4 and 9.

parallel operation
Refers to two or more fans operating in a system, such that the fans each share an
equal fraction of the total system flow at the same system resistance. When parallel
operation is selected in the Fan Selector module, the program will only allow fan
selections that can start up and operate in parallel with each other without
encountering a stall.

Power
Energy rate required to run the fan at the specified speed and produce the specified
volume and pressure.

Pressure
Energy per unit volume of fluid. The pressure requirement for a fan may be defined
as total pressure or static pressure.

Glossary of Terms · 30
price index
Ratio of lowest cost model, of those selected, compared to other selections. This is
not a dollar amount, but rather the comparative ratio of lowest cost fan to other fans
meeting the specified conditions.

ranked fans
A list of the top 5 fan selections ranked by price and by power.

solidity
Number of fan blades supplied with the rotor assembly. Full solidity means a full set
of blades is furnished. Half solidity means half the blades are furnished.

Sound
The program will calculate the nominal sound (or noise) levels for the selected fan
model at the specified performance rating. Sound levels can be expressed in either
sound power levels (PWL) or sound pressure levels (SPL) at a particular distance. In
addition, the user may specify total, inlet or outlet sound levels.

specifications
A description of the standard features, materials, construction details, performance
parameters and available accessories for the various HBI fan product lines that
distinguish them from competitive products.

standard conditions
Normally defined as dry air at 70 degrees F and barometric pressure of 29.92 " Hg.

system curve
A curve representing the system resistance to flow. It is assumed for the system
curve that pressure is proportional to the square of the flow.

Velocity
Speed of fluid at a particular plane, such as the fan discharge, usually expressed in
FPM or metric equivalent.

Volume
Flow rate of the fan, usually expressed in CFM or metric equivalent.
