Problem Session 3
EE363 – Fall 2023

Chapter 3:
1) Determine the work done in carrying +5uC charge from P1 (1, 2, -4) to P2 (-2, 8, -4) in the
field E1 = âxy + âyx and E2 = âxy - âyx
a) along the parabola y = 2x2
b) along the straight line joining P1 and P2
c) From the results, determine whether the given fields are conservative.

Solutions:
2) Calculate the capacitance per length of a infinitely long cylindrical capacitor by
a) finding the E field using Gauss’ Law
1 1 𝑄2
b) using 𝑊𝑒 = ∫ 𝑫. 𝑬 𝑑𝑉 and 𝑊𝑒 = 𝐶𝑉 2 =
2 2 2𝐶

Chapter 4:
3) A charge Q is placed a distance y = d from a very large conducting plane. What is the electric
field at a point P a distance y = 2d from the plane?

4) (P4-9) Determine the systems of image charges that will replace the conducting boundaries
that are maintained at zero potential for
a) A point charge Q located between two large, grounded, parallel conducting planes as
shown in Fig. (a),
b) An infinite line charge 𝜌𝑙 located midway between two large, intersecting conducing
planes forming a 60-degree angle, as shown in Fig. (b).

Solutions:
5) A point charge Q is located inside and at distance d from the center of a grounded spherical
conducting shell of radius b (where b > d). Use the method of images to determine
c) the potential distribution inside the shell,
d) the charge density 𝜌𝑠 induced on the inner surface of the shell.
