Exercise Sheet # 4: Coulomb's Law and Electric Field Intensity (part#3)

Q1- Three infinite uniform sheets of charge are located in free space as follows: 3 nC/m2 at
z=-4, 6 nC/m2 at z=1, and -8 nC/m2 at z=4. Find E at the point:
a) (2,5,-5) b) (4,2,-3) c) (-1,-5,2) d) (-2,4,5)
Q2- Find the magnitude of the electric field everywhere resulting from two infinite planes
with equal but opposite charge densities (s) shown in Figure 1. Sketch the electric field
for the enclosed region and outside the sheets.
Q3- A charge is distributed along the entire x-axis with uniform density Lx and along the
entire y-axis with uniform density Ly. Calculate the resulting electric field E at:
a) point p (a,b,c) b) point q (0,0,c
Q4- A small sphere of mass 0.25 g that carries a charge of 9×10-10 C is shown in Figure 2. The
sphere is attached to one end of a very thin silk string 5.0 cm long. The other end of the
string is attached to a large vertical conducting plate that has a charge density of 30×10 -6
C/m2. Find the angle that the string makes with the vertical. Then, show the impact of the
string length on this angle.
Q5- planes x=2 and y=-3, respectively, carry charges 10 nC/m2 and 15 nC/m2. If the line x=0,
z=2 carries charge 10π nC/m, calculate E at (1,1,-1) due to the three charge distributions.
Q6- A thin annular disc of inner radius “a” and outer radius “b” carries a uniform surface
charge density ρs. Determine the electric field intensity at any point on the z-axis when
z ≥ 0.
