Recently over the past couple months AI has become one of the biggest stories in

Information technology news as well as mainstream news. This makes sense with the

implementation of such technology seemingly appearing everywhere for technology users to

interact with. With AI’s rise in popularity however we have seen many specialists in the field

provide their warning about the technology, and it is very reasonable that while the general

public may be obsessing over all the possibilities and features it brings that it may be easy to

overlook how it may raise issues.

One very good example of such warnings come from Association for Computing

Machinery’s article “Generative Artificial Intelligence” by David Leslie and Francesca Rossi

(2023) where it is explained that this technology poses technical risks as it is a computer thinking

with no human morality or ethical reasoning behind its decisions. We are warned by Leslie and

Rossi (2023) when they mention the many risks people could face interacting with the AI

technology such as bias, discrimination, and privacy rights which are a result of the training

these machines receive. The function of AI technology is to be able to run intelligently as it were

a person but there is simply too many variables to make that entirely safe and while it can

provide great benefit, it is still needed that users are aware of the possible dangers.

Another issue raised by the article by Leslie and Rossi (2023) is the addition of policies

that must be made to properly secure the users due to the use of AI technology and it is stated

that this should be done by taking an end-to-end approach that covers all parts of the production

process. I think this is a very important part of the AI issue, as policy will be the standard for

which the technology will work and handle situations which make it safe for the user. The end-

to-end approach makes plenty of sense and will keep the technology consistent as well as

providing a good record to see what went wrong in case of a malfunction. The more important

aspect of policy in my opinion however, is the policy of how this technology interacts with

people. There should be limits and rules for how the AI handles data given to it as well as how it

gives answers and commits actions. For example, people use technology for many reasons and in

various occasions trust their devices with personal or important information and AI should be

able to properly handle and protect the user’s best interests and privacy.

AI technology seems to be the beginning of a new era of possibility and I believe that

great leaps of innovation will occur due to this technology, but we must also address the risks

which come with such power. Users must not only be careful but policy makers need to do their

part to make this transition is as secure as can be and to be prepared for any issues that may

present themselves. Artificial Intelligence seems like an impossible dream becoming reality but

we need to do our best to make sure that we are ready for it.
