2. 2021/2022 South East Asia Student Chapter of 4. Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No.5 (TT5) receives
the Year: IMechE Engineering Heritage Award

Winner : Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)
Runner-up : Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)
Congratulations to the respective university student
chapters on the achievements.
The last surviving tin dredge in Malaysia TT5 has received
an Engineering Heritage Award from IMechE. This is in
recognition of the efforts of the local state of Perak in
preserving and revitalizing the vintage engineering marvel
that was designed and constructed by the British firm F.
W. Payne back in 1938.

3. Recognition Award to Founder of IMechE

Malaysia Branch

A recognition award was presented by President of IMechE

to Prof. Ir. Dr. Ong Kok Seng as a token of appreciation of
the founder for IMechE Malaysia branch during AGM.

The award was presented by the IMechE President, Phil

Peel in person. Also present were Ir. Dr. Vinesh
Thiruchelvam (IMechE International Strategy Chair), Ir.
Dr. Chua Yaw Long (IMechE South East Asia Chair), Ir. Dr.
Aidil Chee Tahir (IMechE Malaysia Branch Chair), Mr. Zen
Teng (IMechE Business Development Manager for South
East Asia & Oceania), and Ms. Choong Pooi Ying (former

proud to support the 7th APSAO 2023 Congress which will

Institution of Mechanical Engineers Malaysia Branch has
successfully held a webinar titled "Food Additives in Food
Manufacturing”. This talk is a collaboration between
IMechE Malaysia Branch with Monash University Student
Chapter.
The speaker, Ir. Ts. Sia provided insights with regards to
food additives from the types of additives, the applications
in food industries, and the necessity compliance to
international standards.

3. Webinar “Airborne Particle Dispersion and

Characteristics Study and Impact on Indoor
Environment for Ensuring Well-Being of
Communities”

organised a webinar on Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP)
for Oil & Gas Industry.
The speaker, Dr. Cheah introduced ESP, and how it is the
commonly used method for Artificial Lift in oil and gas
production. The presentation focuses on ESP design,
manufacturing, testing and qualification process.
Also highlighted are the specific challenges for operation
of ESP such as pumping high viscosity fluid, and the nature
of sandy and gassy wells.
10. Physical Event “1 Day Course on The Drive
Towards an Environmentally Responsible Fire
Suppression Foam System”
Date: 14th March 2023

A physical course on Fire Suppression Foam System has
been jointly organised by Mechanical Engineering
Technical Division (METD) of IEM, The Viking Corporation
(Far East) Pte. Ltd., and IMechE Malaysia branch.
The course aims to provide the attendees an awareness of
the trends and development on Fire Protection Industry in
the markets of Americas and Europe.
The first half of the course highlights the risks and
concerns on existing use of Polyfluoroalkylated substances
(PFAS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and shows the
market trends and developments.
Second half of the course provides examples and case
studies for solutions in terms of design of foam systems.

11. 23rd Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Date: 21st March 2023
Time: 6.30pm till 8.30pm
Venue: Perdana Room, Royal Lake Club
IMechE Malaysia Branch held its 23 rd AGM on 21st March
2023. This marks the return of physical meeting post
COVID-19 pandemic.
IMechE President, Phil Peel was invited as a Guest of
Honour. The president gave a 20 minutes presentation
which covers a self-introduction, reflection on the 175 th
Anniversary of IMechE, and the future strategy of IMechE.
Upon the closing of the President’s address, there was a
short 10 minutes Q&A session. His presence was well
received by the attending members.
The Chairman of IMechE Malaysia Branch, Ir. Dr. Aidil Che
Tahir then called on the AGM to commence at 7.00pm. The
chairman welcomed the members present and proceed to
introduce the incumbent committee for year 2022/2023.
The Chairman presented the annual report, subsequently
expressing his gratitude to the members present, internal
auditors, branch committee members and South East Asia
Regional Chair for rendering the support to the branch.
The financial report was presented by the Honorary
Treasurer, Ir. Ts. Gerald Victor.
The report for IMechE Malaysia Young Members Section
(YMS) was jointly presented by the Immediate Past Chair,
Miss Choong Pooi Ying and the current Chair, Mr. Teow
Hsien Loong.
The AGM concluded at 8.30pm with a photo session with
the incumbent President of IMechE.

12. Webinar “Additive Manufacturing: Advancing
The Future of Manufacturing”
Date: 5th April 2023 (Wednesday)
Time: 2.00pm till 4.00pm
Speaker: Mr. Lim Mun Chun
Jointly organised with Mechanical Engineering Technical
Division (METD) of IEM, IMechE Malaysia Branch had a
webinar on Additive Manufacturing (3D printing).
The speaker, Mr. Lim Mun Chun highlights the relevance
and trends of Additive Manufacturing in response to the
4th industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0).
Due to technology advancement, additive manufacturing
is progressing faster and more reliable. Addictive can also
benefit manufactures by means of wastage reduction,
provide shorter time-to-market, and ability to create
complex parts that may be challenging to produce under
conventional processes.
The speaker has also highlighted that the adoption of
additive manufacturing in Malaysia is still at infancy stage
and stressed that it is necessary for Malaysia to adopt
Additive manufacturing to be able to compete globally.

13. Webinar “Beyond The Horizon: Navigating The
Future of Aerospace”
Date: 20th April 2023 (Thursday)

Speaker: Ts. Uma Shangery Aruldass
Jointly organised with Mechanical Engineering Technical
Division (METD) of IEM, IMechE Malaysia Branch had a
webinar on Aerospace Industry.
The Aerospace industry is well-known for its complexity,
high degree of precision, and stringent safety
requirements. Ts. Uma has exhibited the impact of IoT and
Industrial Revolution 4.0 and how it is integrated into the
Aerospace Industry, resulting in increased efficiency and
reliability.
Ts. Uma has also shared the potential opportunities and
challenges associated with the integration of IoT and
Industry 4.0 in the Aerospace Industry in Malaysia. She
believes Malaysia has a strong engineering talent pool
which can be leveraged to drive innovation and contribute
to the Aerospace Industry.

The speaker, Ir. Ricky Liew shared the significant

advancements of commercial aviation technologies, the
evolution of cockpit displays, and licensed aircraft
maintenance engineering trainings.

Ir. Ricky Liew has also emphasized that it is a necessity

for licensed aircraft engineers to keep up with the latest
technologies and best practices by means of continuous
education.
