Author: Grant Kelly; Bruce McKenzie
Summary Narrative: The summary narrative of the passage is a concise overview of its key
points and themes. It highlights the importance of security measures in healthcare
communication networks, including intranets, virtual private networks (VPNs), firewalls, and
message encryption. These measures are discussed in the context of safeguarding sensitive
medical data, ensuring privacy, and maintaining data integrity. The narrative conveys the
significance of robust security protocols in the digital age, particularly in healthcare settings
where patient confidentiality is of utmost importance.
Lesson learned: Security in healthcare communication is vital: The passage underscores the
critical importance of implementing robust security measures in healthcare networks, given the
sensitive nature of medical data.Network security methods: The text discusses various methods
such as intranets, VPNs, and firewalls, which can be used to enhance the security of healthcare
communication systems.Data protection in transit: It emphasizes the need to protect data while
it’s in transit, as it can be subject to loss, damage, or attacks. This highlights the importance of
encryption.
Message encryption: The passage explains how asymmetric public-key infrastructure (PKI)
cryptography can be used to encrypt messages, ensuring data integrity, authenticity, non-
repudiation, and privacy. Authentication and privacy: It emphasizes the role of authentication and
privacy in healthcare communications, highlighting technologies like PGP and S/MIME as
standards for email encryption. The main lesson is that security is paramount in healthcare
communication to protect patient data and ensure the integrity of medical information.
Implementing security measures, including encryption and authentication, is essential in this
context.
What Suggestions can you offer:To ensure security in healthcare communication, healthcare
organizations should establish comprehensive security policies, offer regular training to staff on
secure practices, invest in a secure network infrastructure with robust encryption technologies,
enforce strict access controls, and consider secure messaging platforms with end-to-end
encryption. Conduct regular security audits, ensure third-party vendors comply with security
standards, secure mobile devices used by medical professionals, and stay in compliance with
healthcare regulations like HIPAA. Develop a well-defined incident response plan, keep systems
updated, and implement data backup and recovery procedures. These measures collectively
safeguard patient data and uphold the integrity of medical information, essential in healthcare
communication.

Author:April Miller
Summary Narrative:E-waste, or electronic waste, has become a significant environmental
concern as technology dependence grows. It includes old devices like DVD players, laptops, and
cellphones. In the United States, the average household has 11 connected devices, and disposing
of these devices is a complex issue. Many people are unsure of how to properly dispose of e-
waste, leading to it being discarded in landfills or open spaces, harming the environment.
E-waste generation is increasing due to new technology releases by companies like Apple and
Samsung. The global e-waste generated in 2019 was approximately 54 million metric tons, and
it’s expected to increase by 30% by 2030. E-waste contains hazardous chemicals, and improper
disposal contaminates the soil with toxic substances.
E-waste harms human health and the environment by polluting natural habitats, waterways, and
the air. Exposure to e-waste can lead to negative birth outcomes, increased rates of ADHD,
respiratory issues, and other health problems. Proper collection and recycling of e-waste can
mitigate these effects.
To address the growing issue of e-waste, more recycling initiatives and regulations are needed.
The “Right to Repair” movement aims to allow consumers to repair their devices, reducing e-
waste. It’s crucial to raise awareness about the environmental and health impacts of e-waste and
promote responsible electronics recycling.
Lesson learned:The lessons learned from the issue of electronic waste (e-waste) E-waste is
rapidly increasing due to constant technological advancements-waste contains hazardous
chemicals that harm the environment and health. Proper recycling and regulations are vital to
address this problem. The “Right to Repair” movement can reduce e-waste.Environmental
responsibility is crucial to protect our planet.
What Suggestions Can you Offer: To address the growing issue of electronic waste (e-waste),
it’s crucial to promote e-waste recycling, support stricter regulations, and advocate for the “Right
to Repair” movement. Raising awareness about the environmental and health consequences of e-
waste and encouraging manufacturers to design longer-lasting and recyclable products is
essential. Individuals can also reduce consumption, donate or resell old electronics, and
participate in government-run e-waste recycling programs. These actions can significantly
mitigate the adverse effects of e-waste on our planet and well-being.
