It is adapted from the celebrated 1966 novel ‘Silence’ written by the Japanese Catholic author Shasaku Endo . This film powerfully reminds us of the experiences and witness of Christian martyrs in Japan and explores through their story what it means to be a witness of Christ. In 17th-century Lisbon, two fiercely committed missionary priests, Rodrigues and Gare, are told disturbing news by their confessor Valignano concerning their much loved and admired mentor, Ferreira, Ferreira had journeyed to Japan many years before to challenge its brutal suppression of Christianity and to spread the gospel but has now reportedly been forced to recant his faith under torture, and is living as a practising Buddhist with a Japanese wife and children. Astonished and outraged, the two young Jesuits refuse to believe it and demand to be allowed to travel to Japan to track him down and discover the truth While the brutal suppression and torture of Christians by the Shoguns and Inquisitors of 17th- century Japan form the backdrop of the film the real question asked is what does it mean to be a witness of Christ and how does this play out in actions and relationships. While there are still countries where Christians face martyrdom today most of us do not face this reality. How do we then show our loyalty and devotion to Christ? Zechariah 7:7-10 provides this answer, ‘...Treat cone another justly. Love your neighbours. Be compassionate with each other. Don’t take advantage of widows, orphans, visitors, and the poor. Don't plot and scheme against one another ...’ (The Message) Small acts of kindness, generous hospitality, real concern and compassion for our neighbours, putting ourselves last are the demonstration of the living, loving presence of Christ. We also received a donation of 600 cartons of drinking water and food, sanitisers and cleaning products from many public-spirited individuals. A well-established social network of the Macau Salvation Army service units has made it possible for the volunteer teams coordinated by our service units to deliver and distribute supplies to families in need quickly. In support of the elderly and families in need, 50 percent of the edible relief items has been sent to private elderly care homes, drug rehabilitation centre for young people, and older residential areas where power and water supplies were cut off. The remaining 50 percent is stored in the Centre for residents and other organisations in the neighbourhood to pick up upon registration. Many mothers came to collect bottled water to prepare their babies’ formula to ensure safety. The love of Hongkongers is conveyed to the people in Macau through The Salvation Army. The people in Macau also demonstrate their resilience and perseverance through helping and caring for one another. The volunteers stepped up to clean the streets and buildings using sanitising products to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Many passers-by stopped and joined the cleanup ‘The volunteers kept moving, carrying and pulling things around.
