The pandemic’s impact fell most heavily on the disadvantaged members of our society, and The Salvation Army strived across our many ministries to provide succour and relief wherever and whenever help was needed. We supported the elderly, the young, the frail and the displaced with diligence, care and empathy. In this report, we pay tribute to the bravery and professionalism of ur committed team of Officers, Staff Members and Volunteers; | am deeply touched by their unfailing efforts and dedication throughout the year. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy reading their stories, and share my appreciation for all that they have done during a year of great adversity. Throughout the year, we have been truly blessed to continue receiving the generous support of many parties from within the community ~ from our corporate and individual sponsors, to our partners and volunteers. Their commitment has been crucial in our quest to serve those in need and spread the comfort of the Gospel Similarly, | take pleasure in extending my heartiest thanks to our Advisory Board and Advisory Committees for their sage guidance and advice throughout year. It is a pleasure to work with such a committed group of people from different backgrounds and walks of life, all striving together toward a common goal. While we stil do not knaw what the post-pandemic era will bring, we can be certain that we will need to be flexible and adaptive to the evolvingneeds of the society around us. We are committed to developing innovative solutions to deliver our ministries in ways that serve the interests of our greater community, and bring hope to families and individuals in their times of greatest need. In 2020, we marked the 90" anniversary of The Salvation Army's charitable mission in Hong Kong, While it was not a time for public celebration, our hearts were nevertheless filled with immense gratitude for the work of all the Officers, Salvationists, and Supporters for their selfless devotion and exceptional achievements aver the past nine decades. As we embark upon this new decade, we at The Salvation Army will continue to build upon the firm foundation laid by our predecessors, and will continue to do our utmost to meet the material and spiritual needs of our community Que € Dr the Hon. Uncertainties of our economy, finances, careers, health, and the future plague the minds of many people. Indeed, it was a very difficult year when the future is uncertain. Life can spin out of control and suddenly everything is going wrong. Each day can feel unmanageable and unknowable for some, So uncertain it was that even our planned 90 Anniversary celebrations during the year were scaled back to just some quiet celebrations. But one thing we can be certain is that God is faithful and merciful. Also, The Salvation Army is certain to continue our provision of our many services despite the challenging times. Although many of our services had to be suspended for a period during the pandemic, we are so glad that our dedicated officers and staff continue to find innovative ways to reach out to their community where they are serving, Many of our users and clients have expressed their deep appreciation to the Army for their continuing love and care for them, Despite the pandemic, the Army continued to develop relevant and effective programmes and activities ta meet the ongoing needs of the community, Therefore, we dedicate this Annual Report to all our frontline officers and staff who served tirelessly during these uncertain times bringing joy andhope to others. Through this Annual Report, we want to express our deep gratitude to them. You will enjoy reading many heartwarming stories of our users and clients. We extend our gratitude to our Advisory Board and Committee members for their invaluable counsel and expertise to the Army, We are also grateful to all our generous supporters and donors Who have enabled us to make our ongoing services possible. Thus, no family, senior, youth or child who has a need will be neglected by the Army in this pandemic and beyond. The Salvation Army will continue to serve - meeting needs and giving hope today. a = Lieut-Colonel Bob Lee Officer Commanding The Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command SMERSLeM )\M2h-hiehea PR BBR HET SALE + BRAREM LARK ER + AERSHRR Ne BURERER FSR AR BA «BERR TAR DE BA FER GA HAR REE RARRTSER RIB IE + SRERERSSRA MERE R Rio > RAMEREAARHS RBS peas FMBI+, GM, GBS, OBE, JP (EF) mala ppm SRARSEAE, SBS, MH, JP BRR *EBHIP+, GBS, OBE, JP CEE webct SURE, BBS, JP SRE RARE IP RURRE SHULER OR SRBRLK BESLSLAR RRERDR WER HROLt RASARBBOE FRZSeR RM )a Advisory Board and Advisory Committees Composed of a professional and specialist group in their own fields from the community, the Advisory Board and Advisory Committees assist The Salvation Army with its work in the following aspects: 4 Make suggestions to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Army's work % Advise The Salvation Army in matters where the Boards’ expertise would be valuable. So-fong was diagnosed with breast cancer while she was just about to retire in 2018. Her Corps Officer has stayed in touch with So-fong closely and offered her consolation. To treat the cancer, So-fong first received targeted therapy, then chemotherapy and later electrotherapy. Knowing she needs to visit the hospital regularly during the pandemic, officers (pastors) of the Corps sent her high protection masks. Sa-fong, still attended church meetings even during her treatment. Every time officers, brothers and sisters in the Corps would send her care and encouragement, and they also pray for her health. So- Fong feels they are like family accompanying her in her journey of fighting cancer. Life in the Corps is part of her life. At the beginning of her internship, she started from the bottom and did all the duties. Despite having obtained a certificate, she was still bewildered at the beginning. Clare, Tsz-yan’s employer, admitted that at that time she felt Tsz-yan did not have confidence and seemed not committed enough to the work, During the internship, Tsz-yan gradually became more committed to the job thanks to her amiable colleagues and employer, and with time she got better doing her job, Other than pet grooming and customer serving skills, she also learnt about keeping the shop clean, taking care of pets of the shop and customers, and pet product knowledge. Tsz-yan found herself changed a lot during this internship experience, Besides becoming more patient, she is now more confident, responsible and willing to change. After finishing her SE, Tse-yan has joined the pet grooming business as a full-time employee of a pet shop. The internship experience has opened a new door for her, allowing her to realise that a suitable job is not about how much one can earn, but whether one can learn and get satisfaction. A Learning experience is now no longer confined to books. Students were able to have close observation of jellyfish and conduct different experiments by themselves, where they could apply methods of scientific experiments and learn the use of equipment. The students also learnt more about jellyfish — such as they feed through a process: known as ‘osmosis’, and they are sensitive to water quality. The ‘Jellyfish Curriculum, along with the ‘Jellyfish Ambassador Programme’ is so designed to provide TPKS students with an opportunity ta explore science. Elements of STEM and life education are integrated into the curriculum, where students, guided by their teachers, get to feed the jellyfish, record their growth progress, conduct water quality tests, etc. All these foster a sense of science curiosity among students. Through the ‘lellyfish Curriculum, the School aims to let students acquire biological knowledge such as physical structure and life cycles of jellyfish, at the same time allow them to realise the importance of ocean conservation and develop respect and love for lives. However, for Grandma Cheunj her life was far despite having four grandchildren around, 1m perfect. Now 73 years old, Grandma Cheung had gone through some tough times: her husband passed away, her son divorced, and then her daughter-in-law disappeared. Her son left the four young children to Grandma Cheung's care and he hardly gets in touch with them, Since then, Grandma Cheung has become the only carer of her grandchildren. For 16 years she has been taking up the burdens of bringing up the grandchildren and feeding the family all by herselt Grandma Cheung mainly lives on the old-age pension from the government. She did apply for assistance from food banks, yet it was ‘not enough to sustain a family of five; sometimes she even needs to borrow from friends to make ends meet. On top of the pressure of poverty, the responsibilty of taking care her grandchildren and her ‘own health concerns have worn Grandma Cheung down. Joy Family integrated Service Centre reached out to Grandma Cheung to learn about her situation and set out a welfare plan for her. The Centre also invited Grandma Cheung to become a worker of the ‘Love and Green Feast’ - Food Recovery and Donation Public Education Project, from which she can receive after each working session a certain amount of allowance which has become a source of her income. It may just be a meagre allowance, but the Project has fully empowered her by helping her achieve a sense of self assurance and satisfaction,
