Committing ourselves to this goal, the men and women of the Army came together as a holistic force for good to seize the many opportunities that God provided us to serve the local ‘community. I have been deeply touched and gratified to see the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and staff, who have ‘rolled up their sleeves’ to build a loving and caring society. ‘The Army undertook a wide range of highly successful and innovative programmes and projects during the past year. This report celebrates several of these success stories, and offers an insight into the reach of The Salvation Army's work in Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China. We hope that, through these stories, you will feel the joy and vibrancy of the human spirit, as the intervention of the Army brings new hope and meaning to the lives of the many individuals whom we serve. These achievements would not have been possible without the assistance of our many generous supporters and donors, as well as the advice and counsel of our Board members. Your endeavours have reaped huge returns, and | extend my grateful thanks to all of you. 2019 will be a year of further change and progress. | look forward to continuing to work closely with all of you, to discover new possibilities, and to build even more partnerships. Together, let us create a lasting and positive impact for our community. Quued Dr the Hon. Sir David K. P. The successful establishment and opening of the Macau SEN Pilot Project demonstrates how a holistic approach to our community service as produced a synergy between The Salvation Army, Community Leaders and Families, and Government at both District and SAR levels. What a blessing it is to see parents and children arriving at our Centre to receive a welcoming smile and support. The successful INGO Registrations for our two mainland China offices (Chengdu and Kunming) means that we are able to continue partnerships and service provision which commenced 30 years ago. Our active presence in these two provinces continues to provide a channel for dialogue and a forum for identifying needs and resources which will encourage development and transformation. We are especially grateful to Government partnerships which enable and encourage our participation in our partner communities. Significant progress was made during the year with regard to reprovisioning four of our Social Centres here in Hong Kong so that we may continue to support the elderly, youth, and disadvantaged. Our elderly communities continue to grow and The Salvation Army is committed to serving and supporting them. What Joy, Wisdom, and Experience they bring to us all. It is an honour and privilege to facilitate their continued Participation and contribution to society. New shop locations and ancillary services have increased the impact of our Family Stores and Recycling Programme. The donations from the public have enabled us to not only provide quality goods at affordable prices but to contribute to the stewardship of our natural resources by recycling and upeycling rather than simply tossing things away. These are but a few of the exciting developments we experienced during 2017/2018. We have indeed been blessed not only financially but more importantly with friends. and partners who share our Vision and Mission. Together we can and are making a difference for individuals, families and communities in Hong Kong and Macau. Having failed in the HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination), he felt so lost and anxious as though he had hit rock bottom. To make things worse, huge pressures from all sides made him deeply worried about his own future. He had difficulty to shed a tear even he wanted to and was under great disturbance that affected his daily life and emotions. As if he had fallen into the sea, that sense of helplessness drove Chun-ying to search for a lifesaver. Gladly, he met the Lord Jesus just in time. With the help of a Christian friend whom he knew in secondary school, he started attending meetings at The Salvation Army William Booth Corps (Church). In the Corps, Chun-ying found an unprecedented peace that helped relieve his stress. The faith he found has helped him see hope again and the warmth of Corps Officers (pastors), fellowship leaders and his fellow brothers and sisters made him feel loved. Chun-ying has now become a Soldier (church member) of The Salvation Arm dedicated to ‘return love for love’ and spread the gospel to people facing similar problems, putting into practice the Salvationism of ‘Heart to God Hand to Man’ 1. 2017401 ARERR BABE PURE + BITE RR RIE bh ARTRESRRSSMERTNE Bite 2RRREDS BBR2017F5A708 TAWAAR RORHARRARAD FESRMAC AENONBERET R- COE > 3, FS OA BBP 9 1S fic BES DS Se HR 20177172248 + Mae MS os BWROMELEGRES — RBM RRR © 4, 20171 AZ0RB12ASAR ARTS 8 (FRRHT) RUBSALH OR FRR SRAM 5.2017 BM GMBH A22B24A EA GREG > CARERS ABT MRP OS FT BERACMIRHRDESRS RAR © 4. However, for a group of elderly people without financial ‘abundance or with family burden, travelling abroad is definitely a luxury. , ‘The Salvation Army ‘C me’ invited 31 grassroots senior citizens to travel to Kaohsiung, Taiwan free of charge from late October to early November 2017. Uncle Ming, who only had a glimpse of Taiwan from TV travel shows before, loved the Tianliao Moon World most among all the scenic spots he Visited. “The rocks on that mountain look really hard, but they broke with a simple hit of the hammer. The tour guide told us this kind of rocks can only be found in 4 places in the world. They'e really special!’ Uncle Ming could hardly conceal his ‘excitement when sharing on this. As a single, introverted man, the trip gave Uncle Ming an opportunity to make friends and exchange phone numbers: with elders from other centres, expanding his social circle. ‘For the elderly, is it really enough to just be well-clothed and well fed?’ Matthew Yau, Team Leader of Th vice Centre for Senior Cit act, the elders also need spiritual support, an aspect which is often being neglected. The ‘Dream Fly Programme’ aims to y provide an opportunity for the elderly in Hong Kong who have \\ never travelled abroad to broaden their horizons and to create beautiful memories. 1, A2010Fi8 - ABRALGERRERS SALAM | HMI 2017 FA =H ARSSRR-TRRABRA’ LEMEARANESS RECR LWRARARAGH BMS 2 Be 2 BB 200F SMALE SMRAP DIE AS et RMS ERRNO PRR RR 25) AEE PORT RRERNA MEE: RANRRAMRIE BRR Hi CRRRA EAN He 3 HABA EAE EAE BB RRR A IS EY [ASE Se A AR ae A | TEE ARABSRARA MABEL A Ae AEAZMRRERAR RE: BRAK MERE 4 AA BE IB BS+ SARS] RRR OE RE 100 EK: RAGE EER ARASH BD EP-HETEHRAORSRS I RRASSRNES: 5. Chan Ka-ho, now 22-year-old, had once been regarded as a loser by social standards since his dropout. With the help of The Salvation Army, Ka-ho joined the profession of hair styling and officially became a hairstylist a year ago ~ He has found his dreams and his career vision is clear. Today, Ka-ho beams with confidence. He attributed this to the great support from his master and social worker: the former, being both a mentor and a friend at the same time, always encourages rather than criticises and has given him many opportunities to grow; and the latter, being his life coach, was by his side guiding him to re-navigate his life during the days when he was most confused. Last year, Ka-ho was invited by a social worker to join the ‘Dream Puzzle’ Project of The Salvation Army by which he was sponsored to buy a full brand-new set of haircutting kit. Together with the Army's social worker, he offered two sessions of free haircuts for the elderly as a way to contribute his talent to the community. Cheung Kin-hei, social worker of The Salvation Army Tai Po Integrated Service for Young People, believes that support, acceptance and recognition are of vital importance to young people. This Project encourages the youth to set different life goals and have the courage and perseverance to go for their dreams. n MERE ‘SuPPORT FAMILIES yesh SA RAS HR Support PROJECT RELIEVES TENSION BETWEEN GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDCHILDREN me re Be ges tye ges a2 S38 th ETE ° exc e ena eee cr Reems games led by social worke PRALE BRA ORTARSRE : PAT SAME RAR: SRARRERB TS ARATE AH IS «A RE ATT ZERORRA SHR MA 7 RGAE ° SRM RRM RRMA RRR - AER ERR | HPRAMNRB2e- (RRBEC DA FiT RB 92 EM oo A SA AS ft BB A 7 WOR PEM MRM ERAR A Me RAE DATE o | MAS st aI BAR | SARKBROG BASE: [HRRSRMT MRBREAB RR MARS TREE | FR BARRA RE ASACADRE RIGOR CMRH MERIT EARMIRREROPRARE CREAGTI LSRKR* Having worked hard most ofhis life, Grandpa Chan once thought he could enjoy his twilight years. However, with the divorce of his son and the death of his wife, Chan suddenly has to take care of his grandson Chong all by himsett. He began to realise that he was unfamiliar with all the new systems, values and trends of the society, and traditional authoritarian parenting style only drove his grandson further away from him. When The Salvation Army visited the family, Grandpa Chan learnt about the Grandparent Raising Grandchildren Family Support Project, through which he learnt useful skills to communicate with his grandson. ‘I was wrong to have lost my temper in the past Grandpa admitted. ‘I should think about why he did things in certain ways, and let him explain without interrupting him. Also, | should encourage him to share his views, then we can talk over how to solve the problems and analyse the consequences Today, Grandpa Chan and the other ‘elder buddies’ participating in the Project often share their experiences in ‘grandparenting and learn from one another. ‘Grandpa is very gentle now. He hasn't yelled at me recently. He also trusts me morenow,' said Chong. Asheunderstands Grandpa's thoughtful intention, he becomes more self-disciplined in his studies and even helps Grandpa out by doing housework. Grace Wong, The Salvation Army social worker, suggests that family members should ‘communicate with calmness and try to reach a consensus on parenting roles. Formerly worked as a nurse in a public hospital, Yu felt that homeless people could not receive comprehensive medical support under the existing medical system. That is why he joined the volunteering project to reach out to the community. ‘Many homeless people know little of their health conditions. They may not even realise when things go wrong in their bodies. It's not easy to convince them to accept our help; it takes time to build mutual trust.” Doctor Ryle has deep experience with building a rapport with homeless people. Two years ago, soon after he joined as a volunteer, Ryle helped giving out apples and oranges to the homeless in a visit and he was surprised to find that they were so picky that they only took oranges but no apples. Not until later when he taught them about oral care he realised that they all had very serious tooth decay. ‘The best case had only three teeth left with relatively better form. | finally understood why they insisted on picking oranges!" 1, Meen Eesha | SREaR AR Le NST RAR LIMO RTM RH A DER CTO (RRA SS) RE HMANRESIBR SHRTAG ELPORSLRERS HE REHHSR BRS IHRE ES Re 2, RBBB ATMA DMEEO [E.A.SY.
