There were surprises of course, there were individual and team best performances, and all of us would agree that Croatia exceeded our expectations. Of course, besides the opportunity to play the game against the best in the world and to measure individual and team ability against each other there were other expected outcomes. A world sports event represents in a tangible way the benefits of clear corporate purpose, the need of individual roles and capacities which when united with other team members accomplishes a goal. Of course the goal of each team was to win the cup. The goal of the organisational team was to provide a flawless event. The goal of the host was to demonstrate Russia's hospitality, diplomacy, economic products, and quality standards. The goal of The Salvation Army is to encourage, assist, and produce transformational change in individuals and communities so that all may enjoy fullness of life. We achieve this of course not only through individual capacities but more importantly through the capacity of teams of professionals working effectively and synergistically to produce measurable change impact. In this issue you will read two stories of change. Individuals who were directly assisted, supported, and encouraged to make changes which would transform not only their own lives but the lives of their families and the communities they live and work in. I give a heartfelt word of thanks and appreciation to the many hearts and hands found in our teams of professionals, partners, and volunteers who made this possible. Working together we produce an impact far beyond what we could each do individually. After Mrs Tsang's youngest daughter Chi-yiu being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), dyslexia and fine motor delay, the family was under immense pressure and their relationship took a turn for the worse. Today, the mother and the daughter are on good terms and together they can squarely face Chi-yiu's learning difficulties. The journey has been long and difficult, but in The Salvation Army, they have not only found a way out, but also discovered Chi-yiu's talents and strengths other than academics. Four years ago, Mrs Tsang learnt from Chi: teacher in primary school that her daughter had reading difficulties. Later, Chi-yiu was diagnosed as having SEN by doctors and other professionals. Mrs Tsang still remembered the moment she heard the diagnosis: not being able to fully accept it, all that she could think of was how she could help her daughter. iu’s class Lack of understanding about SEN made Mrs Tsang so nervous and anxious that it even affected her way of disciplining her children, ‘Often, | couldn't help it but hit and scold my kids, especially during the time when Chi- yiu’s elder brother didn’t know her conditions and would irritate Chi-yiu so much that she would yell and shout. | don't know what else to do but scream to stop their fights.’ She never thought that such a fierce way to stop their fights would exert a negative influence on her son. As he was mistaken that his mother favoured his sister and neglected him, the relationship among the three further worsened. In addition to managing conflicts in everyday life, supporting her daughter dealing with learning issues was also a big challenge for Mrs Tsang. Chi-yiu’s primary school has an Intensive Remedial Teaching Programme in place to help students with SEN and hires experienced teachers to help these students keeping pace with their studies. However, her learning difficulties made it impossible for Chi-yiu to achieve a sense of accomplishment in her studies. She failed in her examinations and dictations as she could not understand the questions, making her really defeated and frustrated. After joining The Salvation Army, she finally discovered her interests and potentials and regained her self-confidence. Get Motivated in Learning through Doing what They Love Chi-yiu fell in love with freestyle rope skipping and cooking right after she tried these lessons in The Salvation Army. Her social and communication skills have also improved a lot. Mrs Tsang carefully observed Chi-yiu during every lesson. 'Her motor coordination improves a lot after learning how to skip rope. Also, she stops hiding herself away and starts mingling with others. Earlier on in a cooking class, she even took the initiative to help a child whose conditions were worse than hers to wash his fruit.’ Among all the changes, Mrs Tsang was most surprised and delighted that Chi-yiu was no longer afraid of talking to strangers; the girl is even willing to go outside and ask her fellow neighbours to try the food she just cooked! Mrs Tsang has gradually learnt to look at her daughter's conditions from a different perspective and to walk with her as she grows, even on a slightly different path. ‘Rather than changing the child, why don’t we adjust our own mindset first? Don't be afraid to share with others your chile!’s conditions. You may happen to meet someone in the same boat and get more useful information.’ Once in a poor relationship with his younger sister, Chi-yiu's elder brother, under his mother’s influence, has now learnt to be more understanding and considerate of his sister. He often asks The Salvation Army social workers about his sister's performance and looks for the best way for him and his sister to get along. @ RUBS DAL "AR 5 Bc TEESE SLIEDISMIE SEN BELGE» ARR ERE BA: BES AMRIBR 5” (2 MH SEN PF BA I RRA» ROR na ER: RS PRES + AHR RA WAM Re > SB HSS OAR Ate REARS ° The Salvation Army set up the ‘Alternative 5** School’ early this year to help children with SEN to discover their strengths other than academics.
