our sub parish Golden jubilee
celebrations. Praise and thanks to
our Lord who has accepted and
enabled us all to be here today to
mark and witness Kasangati sub
parish’s growth and development
as a church.
However, as the old proverb
goes “Ask an old bold headed
man, the trick he uses to have his
head shaved and shinning – the
response will be that the hard
ships and challenges he carries on
his head help him to shave and
shine his head”. Therefore, today
we are not celebrating the fifty

this church as a sub parish. We
are celebrating our triumph over
the challenges we have faced all
through this fifty years period as
a sub parish and giving praise
and Glory to the Almighty for
His mercy on us as always.
As head of the editorial
committee of this magazine, I
feel much privileged to be the
one introducing this magazine
to you our beloved readers. As
you read through it, you will
discover that right from the
inception of our sub parish to
date, there are personalities that
you can not just afford not to
mention or talk about because
of their tremendous efforts and
selfless sacrifices, both physical
and financial contributions they
have given out to ensure that this
sub parish exists and develop.
You will also learn more on the
proverb of “one by one makes a
bundle”. This sub parish started
very small with a small church
on a small piece of land but now
dreaming about constructing a
modern church sitting on a four
plotted land and with a hope to
buy more land in the church’s
proximity. There are also many
enriching messages from various
God’s people including one from
our own Archbishop the day’s
main celebrant.

for keeping ST. Balikuddembe
Catholic community that
through His Devine protection,
we have been able to grow
from a very small Sub Parish
CHAIRMAN ORGANISING

established in 1972 into a very
big and populous Sub Parish
that has close to 1000 Christians
as of today. “Obukristu

The development of this Sub
Parish has moved through
several structural formations
being caused by the consistently
growing Christian population
within the church and from the
nearby areas.
This has automatically propelled
need for church expansion as
explained by the number of
Churches that have so far been
constructed in this very place
starting with the very first Church
established in 1972 commissioned
by Bishop Ssekamaanya Emeritus,
the second one established in
1997 and commissioned by
Bishop Baharagate (RIP) and then
the modern bigger Church yet to
be established starting this very
month and this is estimated to
have an interior seating capacity
of slightly above 1200 Christians.

and historical event and for the
resilient courage and generosity
that has seen ST. Balikuddembe

the Sub Parishes that make up

OUR INSPIRATION & TIMELESS TREASURES
Marcus Tullius Cicero, a great historian once noted “To
be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to
remain always a child. For what is the worth of human
life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by
the records of history”.
It is therefore upon that statement that Mr. Matende Mathias
and Mrs. Bananuka Beatrice delved into the story of the
humble beginnings of Kasangati sub parish and have this to
share so that by the end of this reading, you could equally
get acquainted with a summerised historical facts and
information about Kasangati sub parish. This is with the hope
that this timeless treasure of our history can be an inspiration
to you as an individual and to the whole Kasangsti Subparish
community. Great thanks go to mr. Musisi Expedito and Mr.
Mubiru for being our encyclopedia.
Kasangati sub-Parish inception:
In the year 1964, Archbishop Joseph kiwanuka,(rip)
sat with the leadership at Gayaza parish and shared his
vision that in future the population would increase and
there would be need to reduce on the distances Christians
travel for prayers to Gayaza. Two devoted Christian
leaders namely Mzee Soka Webuze Sebi together with
Mr. kakoona(rip), perceived the idea and connected it
to their own experience which they were going through
and they then immediately embarked on the assignment
of mobilising fellow Christians who were moving long
distances, all the way from Magere, Masoli and other
surrounding areas to start a church in Kasangati area.
Then, Kasangati was one of the small Christian
communities (bubondo) under Gayaza Parish but
stretching up to Magere , Masoli and Seeta. At that time
Christians who could not make it to Gayaza, would
gather in homes of people for prayers on a rotational basis
hence the need to build a church became an emergency.
The challenge however was how to acquire land.
Acquisition of church land:
The task to locate land was assigned to mr Kakoona and
mr Yozefu Kasolo. They mobilized Christians to start
buying land in phases. Mr Sengendo of Bulamu brought
a suggestion, that part of the offertory money at Gayaza
Parish could be used to support this cause and the parish
priest then, Fr Dominic Byekwaso consented to this and
that’s how the first piece of land was acquired.
The first piece was bought from Mr Kiwanuka Israel at
a minimal price. Later Mr. Musisi Experito (the current

Christians mobilzer) identified more land on sale, which
stretches up to the main road. Again Mr.Musisi identified
another piece on the lower part and was bought from Mr.
Muhammad Semakula. The late Sabakristu Mr mukalazi
helped in speeding up the process of buying this land.
At a later time, more land was bought from Mr.Kasule
who had bought it from the late Muzeyi Sarah who never
wanted to sell to the church. Hence buying piece by piece
enabled us to get the current size of the church land.
Construction of the church premises:
First church.
Christians embarked on the process of building the
small, first church. When Fr Sekamanya(retired Bishop
now) was brought to Gayaza as Parish priest,his
mobilization skills were tremendous and lots of money
were contributed by Christians and construction work
stepped up. The construction mass launch was led
by Fr Bwenvu and many devoted Christians like mr
Ssookawebuze,Muky Ddondo,muky.Suzan Kiiza, mr
Kakoona, mr musoke, mr kato, Muky.Kisero, muky Fista
and her husband Daniel, and other Christians contributed
a lot of materials and money on that day.
Christians volunteered to do the construction work and
under the leadership of Mr,SokaWebuze who was the
site engineer.
Second church:
As the Christians kept increasing, in later years, that
church became too small and was demolished in 1997.
The second one was built and has serviced up this year
2023 and has also been demolished to create space for
a bigger one which is anticipated to accommodate the
increasing numbers of Christians in this Sub parish.

Third and Dream church:
With the help of God, Christians are willing and
determined to construct a modern church and which they
hope will atleast take same time longer , accommodating
the future anticipated members growth. Thus, they have
continued to dream bigger and have thus opted to have
a new church befitting the development of the region
and expansion in congregational numbers. Christians
have embarked on this project and below is their dream
church:
THE ORDER OF CATECHISTS
Catechists are called to enrich the faith formation of
God’s children. They communicate by word.
The first catechist to serve the sub parish was called Mr.
Musunguwavu Zirimmenya who was assisted by Mr.
Mutyaba and Mr. Kakoona-the Sabakristu then. He was
succeeded by Maama Ddondo Rosemary, assisted by
Mr.Kyeyune Bernard and Mama Najuma Gertrude. She
was followed by Mr.Mulyazaawo and Mr. Lugoloobi
Levi who came from kitagobwa in 1995 and has served
till recently . Due to eye problems Mr.Lugoolobi decided
to retire and handed over to the current catechist Mr.
Luuka Segawa.

All these catechists left a legacy having served with
determination under difficult times and have played an
impactful role in raising young catholic men and women
by instilling in them the values of Catholicism and
upholding the future of our church.
THE HEADS OF LAITY (BASABAKRISTU)
The laity, often referred to as the lay apostolate have a
special and primary role where they are called to witness
in the way they live their daily lives and to explicitly share
their faith with others. The head of the laity therefore
goes an extra mile to ensure fellow Christians live up
to the standards of the church and so be inspirational to
the rest of the community. Kasangati has been equally
blessed with the following as the heads of the laity:

STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF HOW
THE BRAIN FUNCTIONS IS KEY TO BETTER
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
As we celebrate our sub-parish day - St Balikuddembe
Kasangati, I wish that we thank God for the gift of our
brains. I wish that we think together on how we can
maximize our brain functions for academic work. After
giving remarks on how one can improve his or her brain
functioning, one student approached me, let us call him
Mark. He began, “Father Joseph I have a challenge,
I understand little and remember less of what I am
taught.” He continues to report that he has used various
approaches to overcome his problem, but this has yielded
nothing. On his face I would read his disappointment
and misery due to his failure in academics. “Father,
what should I do to score better marks to impress my
parents?” He begs of me. In my reply to his request,
I ask Mark, “do you know under which conditions or
environment the brains function best? How it processes
information? And how it stores information for long
term?” He answers me, “Father, I don’t offer biology,
so I have neither read nor been taught to answer your
questions.” Because of the challenges students find in
school, I argue for introduction or inclusion of trainings
of students about the brain and how it functions.
Like any machine, knowing how it can function best and
under which conditions are important for its efficiency
and life span. This applies to the brain also. However,
machines come with manuals, but no brain manual
is provided to students as they use their heads. For a
machine manual, instructions are provided for better use
of such an equipment. This helps to prevent damage of
the machine, increase its efficiency and life span. Let
us have an example of a car, instructions are provided
on its weight capacity, service time, the type of fluids
that would help it work well, the list is long. This
could be applied to the brain too, by training students
in understanding and memorizing methods that can
increase brain efficiency in studies.
So, it is imperative that the students have some

knowledge of conditions and functionality of the brain
for maximum benefit of its use. Let us look at three
issues: the first, how to service the brain; second, under
which state the brains learns best; and third, how the brain
understands and stores information. In the first place,
like any other part of the body, the brain needs to be
serviced through consumption of foods that support and
maintain its life and working, like nuts, salmon, beans,
blueberries, avocados, tomatoes, red cabbage e.t.c, then
water and high levels of oxygen, and lastly enough
sleep. Such feeding should be done intentionally. The
question is, how many students feed with the intention
of the wellbeing of their brains? What of getting enough
sleep? When I ask students how long they sleep, many
are proud to mention that they sleep less than five hours
with the aim to prove that they are very serious students,
but that is wrong. Students in secondary schools should
sleep for seven hours on average per day. Good sleep
comes with positive benefits. Also, it is important to
know that the brain learns better in the alpha wave
state. This state is generated while one is in a relaxed
yet attentive state, at the same time recognizing one’s
environment. Conditions of anxiety, straining, pressure
and stressful environment should be avoided. This goes
to parents, when you over emphasize to your children
to read hard, that can trigger anxiety which results into
bad functioning environment for the brain thus poor
performance. In line with that, in some schools here
and abroad the institutional environment is made so
friendly to avoid pressure on learners. That enables free
learning and thus better results. Lastly, it is important
that the students are trained on how best to understand
information and how data is stored in the brain. There
are many methods that students can use to understand
and memorize for example, the association methods
and imagination methods. I have trained many students
in those two learning procedures and those who have
applied the methods have told me that the approaches
work.
This short discussion was intended to trigger a dialogue
among academicians to rethink of the education system
that exposes students to understanding how the brain
functions and the environment needed for better learning.
This in turn will help students learn better and perform
better in life.

Biblical evidence shows God calling ordinary people by name.
Those that seemed ordinary turned out to be extraordinary,
the scum and filth of society turned out to be the cream and
humble saints of Yahweh. Abraham was called by name
(Genesis 22:11-13) Moses (Exodus 3:1-10), Samuel (Isaiah
3:1-10), Martha (Luke 10: 38-42), Simon (Luke 22:31-32)
All those that God called to them he handled a special mission
to accomplish. To the ordinary eye they looked frail, lost
unqualified and unsuited for the task ahead of them, but in the
presence of God he has a special purpose for them.
Fifty years simple efforts of ordinary ladies and gentlemen,
driven by the Holy Spirit full of service and dedication laid a
marvelous foundation to this great Church. Under a tree the
conducted prayers. To our great founders of happy memories,
the words of the prophet Isaiah made sense “I have called

our hearts and others. As a Parish, Sub-parish, Basic Christian
community and families and ordinary Christians God called

to positively respond to his call. We pray that through

Balikuddembe we may heed to the call of God.
As the psalmist says in Psalm 92: 1-6 “It is fitting to thank

is fitting to proclaim your loyal love in the morning, and your
faithfulness during the night,” Today as Kasangati Sub-parish
we sing psalms of thanksgiving, we are grateful to God for
his providence, we pray that he will continue guiding us and
making us instruments of his peace and evangelization.

Introduction
My Ancestral home is at Seeta village, Misigi parish
in Manyi subcounty of Mityana district under Kiyinda
Mityana Diocese although my memorable home is
at Mutundwe in Lubaga Division under Mutundwe
Catholic Parish. I was baptized at Mulago Catholic
Church by the late Rev. Fr. Ssemanda John under
the names of Godfrey Kaggwa during the colonial
time before we got our independence when Michael
Kintu [1955-1964] was the Katikiro of Buganda. I
am forever grateful to my parents, the late Kafumbe
my Dad of Ndiga clan and the late Nakitto my Mom
of Ngeye clan who were able to support me get a
strong catholic foundation by educating me through
prestigious catholic boarding schools at Kabojja and
Kisubi during the time when it was not easy to educate
a child in those schools.
The schools shaped me to become what I am today
as well helping me to understand and appreciate God
that led me lead a prayerful life as part of my life. It
is through those institutions that I got all the required
Christian initiations in the Catholic Church including
Matrimonio Sacrament at Lubaga Cathedral in 1987.
We were blessed with children who were baptized by
Father Blaise Zzimbe Ssebizibu and Father Ziwa both
children from Kazinga zone of Kasangati as well as being
family friends in early 1990’s. Father Ziwa was one of
the 19 passengers who had just survived a nasty Uganda
Airlines plane crash at Rome-Fiumicino International
Airport in 1988 in which out of the 52 passengers,
33 died. The children who were baptized have now
completed school and living independent lives.
Kasangati image generally
Kasangati community was largely united, disciplined
and living a typical African comitial lifestyle where
prominent families knew each other in the entire
Subcounty. It would be unfair therefore for the future
generation if some of the families are not mentioned.
Such families included; Ssenyondwa’s family from
where Fr. Mayinja and the late Fr. Ssempagama come
from, Makolo a traditional healer and yet a strong
Christian, Makanga, Ssali the florist and Katunda of
Kitegomba. Tamale, Kiwooma, Walusimbi, Lubega

Andrew the only one with a Mercedes Benz, Ssempiira,
Ssempagala and Lubwaama of Masooli. Busuulwa of
Nalusuga. Rev Kityo, Sserunkuuma, Njuba who was
formerly an NRM Minister, Yiga and Luzinda of
Nangabo. Kanyike a prominent farmer, Nsubuga a
prominent hotelman at Kiteezi. Ssebambulidde Keith
a businessman, Haji Magemule, Sserwanga, Kibirango
once a Mayor of Kasangati and Kiraza, of Magere.
Haji Mugambe, Haji Kizito Bulwadda a prominent
business man, Bulega, Maayi, Mubaliya of Seeta a
prominent business man with one of the 1st successful
shops in Kasangati and Kigoonya. Sookawebuuze the
father of Ssebijaano a family with one of the 1st storied
buildings in Kasangati from where Father Blaise Zzimbe
Ssebizibu come from, Dondo from where Father Ziwa
and Father Mbaziira comes from, Kato from where
Zaake, Ssebaduka, Nakazzi come from along with
Catholic Nuns, Wasajja, Kiyingi another family with
a storied building, Maligarita who used to own a
Maternity home, Kivumbi, Ssendegeya my former
teacher in primary, Mukuye the 1st Health Inspector in
the grater Mpigi, Ssenkuba, Minge, Busuulwa, Sekalo,
Mugarula, Salongo Musaazi and Kiwanuka of Kazinga.
Nsubuga D, Kazaalamuwala of Kito. At Wampewo
was Prof. Walusimbi, Kaluuma and Kayongo who was
a brother to Makolo of Kitegomba.
Sseninde father to Sseninde the politician, Bukenya,
Bisaso the shoe maker, Canon Musajaakawa, Sitenda,
and Kayinja of Kiwalimu. Kaleebi, Mayega and
Nalubega Night a lady who 1st drove a pick up vehicle
in Kasangati at Luteete/Masooli. Kisero, Kyazze,
Musawo Mafigiri, Mpungu Jaawo baasi, Kafumbe,
Kunobe the father of Father Kerunga Joseph, Maama/
Ssali Lameka, Musisi Experito, Nsubuga, Musawo
Nsiko, Kavuma, Nalongo Kasujja and Kakoona of
Buyinja. Kyeyune my teacher in primary, Matovu,
Mukalazi, Mpoza who was the Officer in Charge
of Kasangati Prison, Zziwa, Ssebuliba, Kirembwe
who owned the 1st Chicken hatchery in Kasangati,
Bakubye, Masiko, Ssemanda, Kiwanuka, Tamukedde,
Busuulwa, Wamala, Matovu, Nakigoye a prominent
businessman, Kikomeko, Wakubirwa, Abas Ssekajugo
and Zakamwiita of Kyankima.
Malwadde, Ssenveewo, Musisi Bunjo, Babumba,
Nsobya, Katamwa, Mubiru, Kiwanuka, Kasule,
Ssengendo, Bweete, Ssendawula, Ddoola, Gusite,
Kalagala, and Nalongo of Bulamu. Ssebugwaawo,
Kibombo, Katende of Kayebe Source Packers,
Kalyesubula Head teacher Wampeewo SSS, Sserwanga
my former teacher in primary, Masagazi the father to
husband to former Vice President Wandira Kazibwe
and Kabuye at Namavundu. Nyombi of Kabanyoro.
Kategano, Muwanga of Kifumbira/Kabubu. Muwanga
of Makenke, Bukenya a prominent coffee business
man at Manyangwa. Denis Musoke from Kiti,
Kuzaala Kuzibu of Katadde, Remigio of Namayina
and Lwandasa in Kira just to mention but a few.
Children from those home have now grown up living
independent lives with many having transferred away
from Kasangati and take time to come home. Sadly
about 90% of those heads of household that I physically
knew and used share or smile with are now dead and
May their souls rest in eternal peace.
Tarmac stopped at Gayaza yet vehicles were very few
on the road as well as taxis forcing waiting passenger to
struggle to board them. In some instance, in order for
one to get space on the taxi to Kampala from Kasangati,
one had to board the same taxi to take you to Gayaza,
offload and loads again, then drive back to Kampala.
Otherwise transport was largely by bus or on foot and
if lucky and one owned a bicycle, that was regarded
as prestigious. A few scattered powerful families in
Nangabo Subcounty owned motorcycles and private
vehicles yet others with factories like Malwadde’s
family owned a lorry.
Schools around included; Gayaza High school, Our
Lady of Good Council Gayaza and Wampeewo
Senior Secondary school. Then Kazinga, Wampeewo,
Masooli, Gayaza Kadongo, St Thereza and Bosco as
Primary schools. Kasangati Police and Prison existed
with very few shops, TOTAL petrol station, bars
included Musis’s bar near where the playground was, a
small market and a lot of unused land.
Kasangati work experience and major
challenges
36 years ago I was transferred to Kasangati in 1987
after NRA/M had just taken over power, to head what is
today Kasangati Health Centre IV from Gombe Hospital
where I was working. Before the merger to establish the

present Kasangati Health Centre IV, initially two health
facilities existed next to each other i.e. Kasangati Health
Centre III under Makerere University Institute of Public
Health and Kasangati Dispensary previously under
Kabaka’s Government of Mengo but later became a
property of Mpigi District Local Government following
the 1966 political crisis. Later when I left working at
Kasangati, I continued to serve in various capacities at
District, Regional Hospital, Ministry and International
NGO level until my retirement from Public Service
then into private medical practice with a clinic largely
providing Eye care services called Alliance Medical
Centre located at Kasangati.
Health facilities both private and government owned
were very few then when the current Kasangati Health
Centre IV originally Kasangati Dispensary was opened
in 1924. The facility used to provide services to a very
big catchment area that included Nangabo subcounty
and all surrounding subcounties like Kira, area up to
Mpererwe, part of Nansana, Gombe, Busukuma up to
Kyampisi which is part of Mukono district. Leprosy
disease was at one time an issue and patients in the
30-60s used to isolated thus the opening of Kasozi
Leprosy Centre which was converted to Kasozi Health
Centre II in Nansana Municipality when the disease got
controlled with modern medicine and improved patient
management. Other remote areas would be reached
through established Aid Posts at identified areas.
Kasangati Health Centre III commonly known
as ‘Edwaliro lya Nambooze’ following Professor
Namboze who started it under Makerere University
Institute of Public Health as a teaching facility for
medical students practicing Community health through
Primary health care and research within the defined area
of Nangabo Subcounty. The facility and programme
did a great job at improving health at household level
and curative services. At one time it was difficult to
find a case Malaria in the Subcounty, malnutrition and
immunisation coverage greatly improved as well as
lowered maternal and infant mortality rates and other
health indicators.
After 1982 when the 1st AIDS patient was diagnosed
in Uganda at Kasensero in Rakai district, HIV/AIDS
rapidly spread and killed many people due to lack of
appropriate support medicine, low knowledge and
awareness. A re-known popular musician by the name
of the late Philly Bongole Lutaaya living in Sweden then
but suffering from HIV/AIDS was the 1st prominent
Ugandan to give a human face to the disease when he
publicly declared his HIV status.
He conducted awareness sensitisations about the
condition especially through his popular music album
‘Alone’ that was used to fight against HIV/AIDS
together with popular drama play ‘Ndiwulira’ by
Bakayimbira Dramactors. Philly Bongole Lutaaya also
conducted a big concert at Lugogo Indoor stadium in
1988 which I attended and another on 26th August
1989 at Nakivubo War Memorial stadium.
At Kasangati we used to organise with the grater Mpigi
District under Katabalwa Miiro a resident of Magere
in Nangabo Subcounty as RC 5 District Chairperson,
before it was split into Wakiso, Gomba and
Butambala, blood testing and community awareness
campaigns with support from Aids Information
Centre, Ministry of Health and Makerere University
Institute of Public Health. Kasangati Assistant
Resident District Commissioner the late Haji Ssebyaala
Nsi’egulamirambo, HIV/AIDS Non-government
support organisations and interested partners using a
mult-sectoral approach contributed a lot.
The late Brother Anatoli Wasswa of Masaka was also
brought on board to provide counselling and traditional
herbal medicine to the sick as a begining of developing
partnership between local and western medicine by
the Ministry of Health. The anti HIV/AIDS campaigns
were largely conducted at the Health Centre, during
community health outreaches, radios, Television,
Drama and when marking the International Aids day
on 1st November with candle lighting and awareness
film van shows at Kasangati Saza playing field.

Several community based developmental projects
were implemented with external support from willing
partners in areas of health like renovation of the Health
Centre in 1989 with attached sustainability components
through cost sharing. Kasangati was just recovering
from effects of war and getting empowered through
the Resistance council (RC) system by participating
in monitoring health service delivery through Health
Facility Management Committees. Communities
also participated in health service programmes like

Immunization, Reproductive health, Nutrition and
Hygiene, Water and Sanitation where a 2nd borehole
from one at Saza headquarters was sunk at the Health
facility.
Safe clean water was a real challenge at Kasangati and
one never imagined that time will come when piped
water would be the main cheap source of safe water
supply in Kasangati. A lot appreciation to Hon. Sitenda
during whose time as area Member of Parliament made
the initial political push. Other area MPs like Hon.
Kavuma Stephen became a former Deputy Chief Justice
and Hon. Njuba a Minister.

Other activities requiring community participation
included joint fundraising functions, football where I
became FIFA trained Team doctor for Green Valley
Football Club, a Kasangati based football club that at
one time was among the giant super division clubs at
country level. Other activities included involvement
in political activities where I was once elected on the
RC 1 executive of Buyinja zone, attending ceremonies
and burials as well as participating in constructions of
Churches and Mosque. It is against that background
that I was encouraged to become a permanent resident
of Kasangati by constructing a permanent house in
Kyankima zone and thereafter in appreciation, a road -
Kaggwa Drive via my house was named after me by the
area Local Council.
Observations on the Christian side
In the area of Church constructions, in late 1980’s,
together with the late Sseninde the father of Sseninde
the politician, Kiyingi, Ssenkuba, Ssali Lameka and
Mugarula as area committee of elders, we pioneered the
initial plan of shifting the current St. Stephen Anglican
Church from its original sight behind Kasangati Health
Centre to where it stands in Kasangati town. The
committee agreed and negotiated the purchase of a
small piece of land from the late Kiwanuka near his
house and thereafter construction of the church started.
On completion of the initial construction though it later
underwent various upgrading, the Anglican Church
was inaugurated by the late Rt. Rev Bishop Misaeri
Kawuma on 28.8.1994.

Fr. Kyeyune at KSP At the old Catholic Sub Parish Church
Kampala Archdiocese is part of the 19 Diocese in
Uganda established in 5th August 1966 after Rome
agreed to combine Kampala and Lubaga Diocese whose
headquarters are at Lubaga where Lubaga Cathedral is
located. The Diocese governs through its established 77
Parishes, yet the Parishes govern through the established
493 Sub Parishes. The Archdiocese was 1st led by the
late Cardinal Kiwanuka Nsubuga [1966-1990] while I
was still a youth, then later by late Cardinal Emmanuel
Wamala [1990-2006], late Archbishop Dr. Cyprian
Kizito Lwanga [2006-2021] and currently led by His
Grace Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere from 2021.
Gayaza Parish is part of the 77 Catholic Parishes that
form Kampala Archdiocese established 116 years ago
in 1907 although over time Parishes like Kitagobwa in
2000 and Nabitalo in 2007 were curved out of Gayaza
Parish and Sub Parishes like Kibibi were attached to
Namaliga Parish in Luweero district. By the time I came
to Kasangati, , Rev Fr. Mutyaba was the Parish Priest
who among other Priests, run the Parish with the elderly
Father Ssekalega. He was followed by Rev. Fr. Kyeyune
as Parish Priest before the current Rev Fr. Makanga Jude
took over. Unfortunately Father Mutyaba, Ssekalega
and Kyeyune are now dead. It should be noted that
some prominent catholic homes around Kasangati and
Gayaza Parish have provided Catholic Reverend Fathers
i.e. Ssenyondwa, Dondo and Kunobe.
We always attended Sunday services at Gayaza Catholic
Parish Church in the old church building which had
many big wooden poles holding the roof and floor made
out of old bunt bricks before it was renovated with a lot
of support from Mr. Bioni, a white man and resident
of Magere to what it is today. Kasangati Sub Parish
Church at one time was closed for about one year by
Rev. Fr. Mutyaaba due to developed indiscipline in the
once powerful - The Good Disciple Choir which was led
by late Mateega the Choir Master and Patron who was
called Mukwaba who worked in one of the Embassies.

Kasangati Catholic community was instructed by Fr.
Mutyaba to begin attending Sunday services at Gayaza
although later through negotiations involving influential
church people like Ssebaduka as Sabavubuka, Musisi
Experito and others, the Church was re-opened for
normal services. We also attended many big Church
functions at Gayaza Catholic Church on special
Sundays and days, many of which were conducted in
the large Church compound under the trees.
We also used to make pilgrimages to Kiti where St.
Mukasa Kiriwawanvu was born and Namugongo on
3rd June Martyrs day. Those days we used to foot in a
team to Namugongo via Kira since there were no taxis
plying that route and Boda Bodas were nonexistence. It
was prestigious to own a bicycle and those who opted
to travel by taxi, would use the longer expensive route
from Kasangaati, Kampala, Kireka then Namugongo.

The old and smaller 1st St Balikudembe Kasangati Sub
Parish Church was also in existence by the time I came to
Kasangati although I later contributed to its renovation
after re-opening it and before it was demolished. I
was told that the land where the Church stands was
bought from the nearby late Kiwanuka who at one was
hit with a bomb. The church was then constructed in
the early 1970s by the late Sookawebuuze of Kazinga
zone and Grandfather to Fr. Zimbe who was the main
Manson together with one Isaake. Mr. Ssebijaano
provided money and other related technical support
together with a Church committee of Kakoona who
were strong Church leaders in the Parish. Fr. Matthias
Ssekamaanya now Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of
Lugazi was the Parish Priest of Gayaza Parish. and
Among other community members who contributed
a lot to the construction by carrying construction
materials on their heads included the Widow of Kato
and mother to Zaake, Kizza Susana, Lwanga Edwarido
and Adeere all of Kazinga zone as older children in
the area provided manual labour. Kabankoba became
the 1st Catechist ‘Musomesa’ of St. Balikudembe
Kasangati Sub Parish followed by Maama Dondo
mother of Fr. Zziwa of Kazinga who used to take us
through Sundays services at the Church and was later
replaced due to age by Maama Najuma of Kazinga.
Those Catechist ‘Basomesa’ did a great job at a time
when Priests were still few. Ministry of Works yard
offices (PIIDA) in the open space where the Church
shops project was constructed was in existence. With
the growing population as 40% of the population in
Gayaza Parish are estimated to be Catholics, time came
when the old church could not accommodate the clergy
and as a result through the Sub Parish construction
committee headed by the late Mukalazi of Kyankima, a
new St Balikudembe Kasangati Sub Parish Church was
constructed.

Again Mr. Bioni of Magere village, the clergy together

with the late Mukalazi through a lot of determination
and efforts contributed greatly towards construction of
the 2nd Church. It suffices to mention that my family
in addition contributions to erect the new church also
contributed towards purchasing of a bench for the
church until when a decision was taken to demolish it
for a larger and modern proposed 3rd St Balikudembe
Kasangati Sub Parish Church led by Bazira Tony
construction committee of the Sub Parish in 2023.

Conclusion
In conclusion, I therefore extend my appreciation
towards Kasangati Sub Parish but more especially the
organizing committee to mark Kasangati Sub Parish
50 years of existence, for extending to me this rare
opportunity to share my personal experiences within
my time at Kasangati as an elder. I have simply shared
a summary due to time and space. I now live a satisfied
aging life and therefore thank and adore God for his
creation, provision, guidance and protection through
my life (Isaiah 12:4-5). I am now in my resting period as
an elder Heading ‘Omutuba gwa Kakomo mu Ssiga lya
Mpungu e Bweeya Butambala’ - Ndiga clan. Sabasajja

 DIVINE MERCY HAS MADE ST. JOSEPH BALIKUDEMBE
KASANGATI TO SHINE MORE
As some groups of Christians from St. Joseph
Balikuddembe Kasangati got an inspiration with this
devotion of divine mercy some time back in 2014
In 2015 Gayaza Parish got a chance of spreading the
message of Divine mercy by the Eucharistic apostles of
Divine Mercy from Kampala archdiocese. A letter was
written to the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Jude Makanga and
Permitted this outreach team to visit all the sub parishes.
The work was well done throughout the parish. In this it
is when we came to know that there were lessons about
Divine Mercy which are called Cenacle Meetings by one
of the Christians sent from the Kampala Archdiocese by
names Mr. Ssembatya Ponsiano who started staying in
our sub parish. We came to start having meetings as it is
requested by Jesus himself in the diary 437 and 478.... I
desire this congregation to start .......thus the formation
of this group.
Our cenacle has been very active in all activities
especially in the liturgy, we gather every Wednesday at
4pm we sit at the church.
We have come to know more about our catholic faith and
during our meetings, we use the Holy Bible, Catechism
of the Catholic Church, the diary of St. Maria Faustina
Divine Mercy in my soul, the cenacle formation manual
and the letter of St. John Paul II God rich in mercy.
We know very well that devotions help us to reach Jesus
but with Divine mercy, it’s more than a devotion it’s a
way of life, Jesus himself is devotion to us.
Vision
Eucharistic apostle of divine mercy to strongly emphasize
the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and
encourage the faithful to always be before the blessed
sacrament as more frequent as possible.
Mission
To see that Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy teach
the new way of prayers as reveled by Jesus to church
through St. Sister Maria Faustina
Objective:
To see that Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy help as
much as possible to form small groups called cenacles
which sit periodically to learn about Divine mercy
message as way of life and our catholic faith using the
spiritual books above.

among Gayaza Parish and beyond
► Invitations of the outreach team of Kasangati cenacle
group members to spread the message of Divine
mercy from different parishes has brought the sub
parish to be recognized within the parish and beyond.
► Cerebrating Divine Mercy Sunday according to
liturgy given by the Catholic Church.
► This cenacle group encouraged members to recite
chaplet of Divine Mercy and other Divine mercy
prayers.
► Cerebrating the Feast of St. Maria Faustina and St.
John Paul II in a special way which is not the practice
to other sub parishes.
► Many Christian have turned back to the life of
sacraments e.g. Matrimony, Eucharist and penance.
► The visiting of Divine Mercy Jesus’ image in the
parish has brought many testimonies from the people
of God (everyone is witness for this)
This year on 5 October 2023 at Lubaga Cathedral we
got four members who consecrated themselves to
Divine mercy as apostles of Divine mercy and these
are; Mrs. Kyaligonza Barbra, leader of the group Maria
Kabugo Angella finance, Stella Maris Kato and Nalongo
Kyeyune.
They promised to carry on this message by teaching
more about the five channels of Divine mercy i.e.
