FOURTH INTENSIVE – FINAL EXAM
1. A. Read the article about helpers.
We hear from people who do voluntary work in their free time.

JACOB

My main job is acting. However, it’s not a regular nine to five job; in fact
it’s not really a regular job at all! So, I have quite a lot of spare time and a
couple of years ago I decided to find some voluntary work in my area. The only problem was that because my
hours aren’t regular I couldn’t guarantee when and how long I would be available. Then a mate of mine suggested
recording stories for the blind. I could do that when and if I had time, which was ideal really. Also it was
something I felt confident about doing, because of my acting background. I started doing the recording stories
and it was brilliant. I also record newspapers sometimes. That’s fun too and I really feel like I’m helping people.
TESS

There are always children at any school who have trouble with maths and the students at my school are no
exception. I’m a maths teacher by the way! I know it’s a difficult
subject for a lot of people and if students fall behind it’s very difficult
to catch up. Things can quickly go from bad to worse. So, I run an
extra maths class once a week on Tuesdays for students who need
additional work, practice and advice. It’s on my own time so I don’t
get paid for it. But it’s only an hour and a half a week and I definitely
feel that it’s worth it as it really helps those students who are having
problems. I had a supportive teacher who helped me out at school-
that was with French- and it definitely gave me confidence and got
me through exams and I’ll always be grateful.
DOMINIC

I live and work in a big city and you’d be surprised how many homeless people there
are- sometimes right in the city centre. Some people are homeless because they’ve
lost their jobs, some have run away from home, some have health problems. It makes
me understand how lucky I am to have a job, home and family. So, I like to help out if
I can in my own small way. I work at a shelter for homeless people at the weekend.
That’s a place where they can get a hot meal and a bed for the night. I help with the
cooking. I also chat to people and try to give them some advice about getting work,
and generally just cheer them up. It isn’t very much but I believe that even a little
helps. It also makes me feel better about myself.
