GLOSSARY

canvas: a strong, rough cloth used for making tents, sails, and bags

concrete: a very hard building material made by mixing sand, cement, small stones, and water

design: patterns on a building

disaster: an event that causes great harm or damage

felt: a type of thick, soft cloth made from a pressed mass of hair and wool

nomads: people who move from one place to another

pavement: path with a hard surface on one or both sides of a road, that people walk on

rent: a fixed amount of money that you pay regularly for using a room, or a house which belongs to
someone else

Tremor: a movement that could be an earthquake

1. Which kind of place would have a slanting roof? Tick the correct answer.
A. A place where there is a forest.
B. A place where it rains heavily

2. Where are you most likely to find wooden houses? Give a reason for your answer.

Ans. Wooden houses are more likely to be found in forests. This is because wooden houses are
made of wood which is easily available from the forest.

3. What disadvantage does a mud house have?


Ans. A mud house can break down easily if there is an earthquake or flood.

1. In which kind of places are you most likely to find an igloo? Tick the correct answer.

2. Why are tents made of canvas or camel skin?

Ans. Tents are usually made of canvas or camel skin because then they are light to carry
around. Canvas and camel skin can keep the tent cool in a desert.

3. Is your house suitable for the climate where you live? Explain your answer with an example.

Ans. Yes my house has thick walls that traps the heat and keeps the house cool during summer. My
house has a flat roof because there is very little rainfall in our area.

2. How did the floods in Uttarakhand in 2013 affect the people?

Ans. The people of Uttarakhand lost almost everything they had. Many lost their homes and
valuable belongings. Crops were also destroyed and many animals died in the flood.

3. Which do you think can cause more damage to our lives and property - flood or earthquake?
Why?

Ans. An earthquake can cause more damage because when the earth shakes, houses collapse,
sometimes injuring and killing many people and animals.

2. Why do some people live on the streets?

Ans.Some people live on the streets because they do not have place to stay. They do not have
a money to pay rent.

3.Imagine a day in the life of a homeless person. Write a paragraph describing the problems this
person may face.

Ans. Some of the problems faced by the homeless.


They will not be protected from the rain, heat or cold.
They cannot enjoy the safety and comforts of living in a house with their loved ones.
They may be chased away by the police.
They would not have a proper place to bath or to cook their food.

Lesson 1: Different Kinds of Houses

1. Write 2 features of houses that you see in your neighbourhood

Ans.Houses in my neighbourhood are made of concrete and are multi-storeyed.

2. What disadvantage would a house made of canvas have?

Ans. A house made of canvas would not be able to protect people from rain please.

3. How would houses in places with heavy rainfall be different from houses in places with little
rainfall?

Ans. The shape of the roof will be different. In places with heavy rainfall, houses would have a slanting
roof.
Lesson 2: Houses Across Regions

1. Write if true or false.

A. An igloo is built in a hot place. False


B. A tent is found in a very hot desert. True

2. Write any 2 similarities between a yurt and a tent.

Ans. They are both temporary homes. People can carry a tent or a yurt with them when they
move to another place.

3. What type of house would be suitable in these places? Give a reason for your answer.

A. The Thar Desert of Rajasthan

The Thar Desert is very hot and dry. Tents made of canvas or camel skin would keep the house
cool here.

B. Cold and icy Greenland

In very cold places such as Greenland houses are made of ice because they trap the heat and keep the
house warm.

C. Grassy plains of Mongolia

In grassy plains houses would be built of canvas because the nomads can carry them from place to
place.

Lesson 3: Losing Our Homes

1. How can a flood make someone homeless?

The flood may sweep away a house.

2. Sam lives next to a river. Whenever there is heavy rainfall, the river swells. Which natural
disaster is likely to happen there? How could that disaster affect Sam?

Ans. A flood is most to happen there. Sam's home may come under water during the flood. His
belongings and house may also be destroyed.
3. Write any 2 ways in which the government can help people who have been affected by natural
disaster.

Ans. The government can distribute free food to the people who have become homeless. The
government can also provide homes in another place for the homeless people.

Lesson 4: Homeless People

1. Where do you think that a homeless person may look for shelter?
Ans. A homeless person may look for shelter in the slums in a city or the footpaths of a road.

2. Many families lived in a slum. One day, the slum was broken down to build a shopping mall.
What kind of problems will the families face?

Ans. The families may become homeless. If they are homeless they may have to sleep on the
on the streets. They could face problems in finding a place to cook food and to bathe.

3.Imagine that you have to interview a homeless person for a school project. Write any
questions that you would ask him/her.

Ans. What is most difficult about being homeless? How do other people usually treat
homeless people?
