Reason (R): Air is a mixture of gas in gas which main constitutes is oxygen (21%) and nitrogen (78%).
12. Assertion (A): Two liquids A and B having differences in their boiling point can be separated by fraction
distillation.
Reason (R): Only two immiscible liquid is separated by fraction distillation.

14. Assertion (A): Impure benzoic acid can be purified by sublimation.
Reason (R): Benzoic acid sublimes on heating.
15. Assertion (A): A mixture of acetone and methanol can be separated by fractional distillation.
Reason (R): The difference between their boiling points is very less.

Answer questions 16-20 based on the following case study:

Read the passage and answer any four question:
Mixtures are constituted by more than one kind of pure form of matter. Sodium chloride is itself a pure
substance matter. The solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. Lemonade, soda water
etc. are all examples of solutions. Alloys are mixtures of two or more metals or a metal and a non-metal
and cannot be separated into their components by physical methods. A solution has a solvent and a solute as its
components. The component of the solution that dissolves the other component in it (usually the component
present in a larger amount) is called the solvent. The component of the solution that is dissolved in the solvent
(usually present in lesser quantity) is called the solute.

16. Brass is a mixture of:

a. 30% zinc and 70% copper
b. 70% zinc and 50% copper
c. 60% zinc and 70% copper
d. 30% zinc and 40% copper
17. Tincture of iodine solution is made by dissolving:
a. iodine in potassium iodide
b. iodine in vaseline
c. iodine in water
d. iodine in alcohol

Class 09 - Science

Solution

1. (d) corrosion and it is a chemical change

Explanation: corrosion and it is a chemical change
2. (a) visible with a powerful microscope
Explanation: The size of particles of the colloidal solution lies between 10-7 cm to 10-4 cm in diameter.
So, The particles of colloidal solutions are visible with a powerful microscope.

3. (d) (a) - (i), (b) - (iii), (c) - (ii), (d) - (iv)
Explanation:
An aerosol is a type of colloid in which liquid is the dispersed phase and gas is the dispersion
medium. Examples include fog, clouds, mist, etc.
In oil-in-water emulsions, oil acts as the dispersed phase while water acts as the dispersion
medium.
Foam is a type of colloid in which gas is the dispersed phase and solid is the dispersed medium.
Examples include foam, rubber sponge, whipped cream, etc.
Sol: It is a type of colloid in which solid is the dispersed phase and liquid is the dispersed
medium. Examples include milk of magnesia, mud, paint, etc.
4. (c) 1-D, 2-A, 3-C, 4-B
Explanation:
i. D Homogeneous mixtures have uniform composition throughout & components can not be
separated
ii. A Heterogeneous mixtures have non uniform composition & the components can be seen
separately.
iii. C In chemical change new substances are formed & can not reversed back to its previous state.
iv. B Melting of ice is a physical change as no new substance is formed & it is reversible change.
5. (c) a translucent mixture is formed
Explanation: Egg white is translucent. Egg albumin forms colloidal solution which is translucent.
6. (b) 1-D, 2-A, 3-C, 4-B
Explanation: (1) Brass is an alloy made primarily of copper and zinc. So Solid in solid.
(2) Ammonia is gas and water is liquid. So, ammonia in water is gas into liquid.
(3) Vinegar is a liquid consisting of about 5–20% acetic acid, water, and other trace chemicals, which
may include flavorings. So, liquid in liquid.
(4) Amalgam definition, an alloy of mercury with another metal or metals. So, liquid in solid.
7. (d) IV
Explanation: White fumes of Ammonium chloride(NH4Cl) will be formed.
8. (d) water is solvent and sugar is solute
Explanation: As water is in large amount, it is solvent and sugar is in less amount hence it is solute.
9. (b) A, B and D
Explanation:
For liquids and solid solutes, increasing the temperature not only increases the amount of
solute that will dissolve but also increases the rate at which the solute will dissolve. For gases,

the reverse is true. An increase in temperature decreases both solubility and rate of solution.
So, statement A and D correct.
A way to measure solubility is to determine the maximum mass of solute that can be dissolved
in 100 grams of solvent at a particular temperature. So, statement B correct.
Sodium chloride, NaCl, is a soluble salt. The solubility of sodium chloride is 36 g/100 mL water
at 25oC. So, statement B incorrect.
10. (b) are both chemical processes
Explanation: The cooking of food and digestion of food are both chemical process as in both chemical
reaction takes place.
11. (d) A is false but R is true.
Explanation: Areated drink contains carbon dioxide had as a solvent and water as a solute.
12. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: To separate a mixture of two or more miscible liquids for which the difference in boiling
points is less than 25 K, a fractional distillation process is used, for example, for the separation of
different gases from the air, different factions from petroleum products, etc.
13. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: A separating funnel can be used to separate the components of the mixture of immiscible
liquids. Oil and water are two immiscible liquids and forms two different layers in a separating funnel.
14. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Benzoic acid sublimes on heating while impurities do not.

15. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Whenever the difference in boiling points of two liquids is less than 25oC they are
separated by fractional distillation.
16. (a) 30% zinc and 70% copper
17. (d) iodine in alcohol
18. (b) water is solvent and sugar is solute
