Lessons Simplifications and Extensions

Lesson 1 Gifted Child- For a gifted child I would let the

child do the packet on their own at their own
speed and give them a packet with extra/hard
problems.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- For an ELL student I would send this
packet home ahead of time for the child to
look over and give this student extra
help/support one on one when they are
working by themselves on the pages.

Lesson 2 Gifted Child- I would have this child work with

more complicated fractions like 1/8, 1/10, and
1/12. I will then have them compare to see
which ones are bigger and how many it takes
of each to make them equal in different ways.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- I will help the child’s understanding of
the prefix “un-” that will be used a lot during
instruction. I will explain how we will fold the
paper in half and then UNfold the paper. I will
do this while physically doing the action so
the child can put the action to words. I will
also send home a worksheet and detailed
description a couple days before explaining
what we will be working on so then they can
look over it and ask any questions or get
extra help if needed.
Lesson 3 Gifted Child- I would have this child
determine and place a set of fractions with
different denominators on a number in order
between 0 and 1
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- I would use lots of gestures and use
terms like far and near to explain distance
between 0 and 1.

Lesson 4 Gifted Child- I would show this child how to

simplify fractions and turn them into mixed
fractions/numbers.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- To help the child understand greater
and less than I would show them an amount
of an object that is more than the other and
have them point to the one that has more
then I would point to the > symbol and explain
that this object is > than this object. I would
do the same for the < symbol.

Lesson 5 Gifted Child- Again I would have the child turn

the fractions into mixed numbers where it
applies.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- I would use terms more, smaller, and
larger in place of greater and less than.

Lesson 6 Gifted Child- I will have this child use

mixed/bigger fractions rather than regular
fractions.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- I will use words like alike, like, same,
and different in place of the word “compare”
when teaching this lesson. I will show the
child two similar objects and have them tell
me what is the same and what is different to
demonstrate what it means to compare.

Lesson 7 Gifted Child- I will have this child use

mixed/bigger fractions rather than regular

Lesson 8 Gifted Child- I will have this child work with

multiple and more difficult fractions in the
number stories.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- For the number stories I will use a lot of
visual aids and create a picture dictionary key
for the number stories as well.

Lesson 9 Gifted Child- I would give this child more

complex questions with bigger numbers that
end with mixed fractions.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- I will teach the child what collection
means by showing the student groups of
items and saying how they are alike and that
is why they are all in the same group making
a collection.

Lesson 10 Gifted Child- I will give this child extra more in

depth/harder questions at the end of their
assessment if they get done early.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would
make sure to have this student sitting upfront
close to the board and I would always speak
towards the student and not have my back
turned so the student can hear me better and
see my lips moving. I would also repeat any
directions directly to that student if need be.
ELL- I will sit with this student and help them
read through the assessment.

Lesson 11 Gifted Child- For this day the child will just
watch the movie and do the assignment like
everyone else.
Child with Hearing Impairments- I would have
this child sit near the speaker.
ELL- I have subtitles on for this child.
