Community Service – Employer

Community service plays an important role in creating a sense of responsibility and

contribution to the well-being of others. During the holiday season, I participated in a community

service project aimed at collecting canned food and goods for a local shelter through my

employer, INOVA. The goal was to support individuals and families facing difficult times,

aligning with the spirit of giving during the holiday season. This experience provided an

opportunity to work with colleagues in a way that differed from our usual work setting; and

created a sense of unity and giving back to the community. My personal responsibilities were to

be a point person for my department, designing the box in my area, and assisting in box

collection to be delivered once the drive was complete.

The collected food emphasized the difference that community service can make,

especially during such an important time of year. This service project prompted self-reflection

and a sense of appreciation for even having the privilege to be able to contribute to others. A

patient's health is influenced by various factors, including access to basic necessities such as

food; and as a Medical Dosimetrist, caring about patient health is fundamental.

Beyond the immediate impact on the community, this community service endeavor has

influenced my role as a Medical Dosimetrist by fostering teamwork, promoting a sense of social

responsibility, and enhancing my understanding of the importance of a broader healthcare

involvement. This community service was not only a personal enrichment activity, but also a

professional development tool that strengthened the bond between us as healthcare professionals

and the communities that we serve; and allowed for me to work collectively with healthcare

professionals in other modalities and units.
