Introduction

Reflecting upon past experience is an important ability for all professionals to recognize our

own strengths and weaknesses in order to develop better communications skills, conflict resolution

and enhance future performance . In the assignment, I will share about the community project that I

participated recently. This reflective report consists of the challenges I face during the community

service and how this project reflected my personal life.

I worked with another 11 members. We, Peak Performers conducted a community project

which was called Hope Givers. During first zoom meeting, I proposed and selected by the tutor and

members to be the team leader. We decided to conduct a charity project during our discussion. The

organization which we chose was Penang Kawan centre in which helped in feeding the poor and

homeless. Our objectives of this project were to create awareness of the community towards the

needy and homeless and raised funds for Kawan centre so that Kawan centre was able to continue

carrying out their purpose and help the communities who were in need and homeless. Lastly, we

also collecting groceries and participated in preparing food at the centre by showing our care to

them as well as give hope to the needy to carry on their life.

Learning experience

Through this volunteering experience it helps me to realize the deeper and broader meaning

and impact of the community service especially during Covid-19. Covid-19 and the movement

control order(MCO) has affecting our life in many ways, which can be tough on our finances, social

life and wellbeing. This is disproportionately impacted under privileged households and

disadvantaged group during this critical time. As I began to find out more information about Kawan

centre, I realized that the centre has been feeding about 150 mouths each day since 2019. Due to the

pandemic, today, it has increased to 220 mouths a day. Furthermore, the main financial support of
the centre come from Kawan shop, which sells second-hand item and it has closed down due to

MCO.

For me, I have a family and friends that I can call on in this pandemic. They might provide

me with financial support, food, and be there for me if I need someone to talk to. People who are

experiencing homeless need the same thing. They also need support and many of them struggle with

social isolation, especially during covid-19 that has distanced people with society connection and

their wellbeing. It stirs up the passion in my heart to help to raise funds and collect groceries in

supporting the centre to provide meal to the needy so that they don’t go hungry. Therefore, I

suggested to our team to participate in volunteering at the centre. I was encouraged by the support

that given from my team members. Everyone agreed to participate and began to raise funds.

Personalization

This is my first time leading a group to organize this charity project. I believed to be an

effective and good leader I must be able to influence my teammates. I must first be an effective

leader myself and be responsible to lead teammates on right path as well. I need to be ahead of them

in thought and a role model. Then I can guide and help others to conduct their task effectively.

Next, I must have a vision that is able to share with them and can persuade others to take them as

their own. One of the challenges was communication skills. I learnt to be patient as I communicate

with members from different age group and backgrounds. I also learnt to listen to others opinions

and would make changes. In order for me to give suggestions and in making decision, I need to

have a good understanding towards their strengths and weaknesses. During the process of

preparation, I managed to talk to each member and listen to their opinions towards this project. I

was encouraged to see that even though many of them have yet to experience in fund raising and

volunteering service but everyone was willing to get together to plan and brainstorm through zoom

meeting.
Describe the initial position or starting point.

Two days before we present our proposal, our presenter was unable to present due to her

uncle passed way and some internet connection issues. Hence, we made some changes and found

replacement. Due to limited time planning, our initial funds raising target was RM600 and only

some groceries donation items. Besides, every member initially wanted to take part at the field

work. Due to MCO, only 8 members were able to participate in physical activities because some of

our team members were staying in different districts. Apart from this, the initial plan is to serve

and preparing food for 200 people but on the actual day we serve 250 packets of lunch.

Describe the experience and the effect(s) on the initial position.

Our initial plan might not proceed 100% according to our desires. I always stayed calm and

looked for alternatives as experience changes of plan due to many factors. Even though we had to

find replacement for the presenter but I am glad that no one complained and one member willing to

replace her. Secondly, even though we were given limited time to execute this project, surprisingly,

within 10 days, we managed successfully raised RM 3029.20 and collected quite a number of

groceries.

For those who are unable to participate the field work, volunteer helped in documentation

like financial report and final report. Lastly, on the field work. When we heard that we need to serve

250 pax and helped to clear the pathway for roof renovations. All the participants contributed

without blameless and it was very encouraging. The teamwork spirit and the compassionate heart of

our members have touched my heart even in this pandemic and challenge situation. As a team
leader, I felt very proud that I could work with the Peak Performers. Without their hard work and

contributions, the project would not be success.

Summarize the present position

Participated in preparing food and distributing food to the needy and homeless at Kawan
centre was a memorial experience that I have ever had. Working together with ‘Uncle Ben’ and his
team in preparing food was an enjoyable moment. Through the conversation with one of the team
members, ‘Aunty Ling’ who has been serving at the centre for 13 years had inspired me and respect
to her. She said she has been blessed with grown up sons and have a happy family. Since then, she
has been taking part in the centre to share love to people who are in needs and homeless, so that
they could feel love and have hope in this world. Her perseverance in serving really touches my
heart that I also need to step out from my comfort zone and care for my community. Besides, I also
learnt to cook new dishes and make new friends.

How the experiences have influenced your outlook for the future

I enjoyed participating at Kawan centre. I met many nice people. Their voluntary actions

had touched me a lot. I hope I can show people that we should not take things for granted or waste

things because there are many people who do not have anything at all or have lost everything. I do

not want my kids to think they deserve everything just because everyone else does. I want them to

appreciate the things they have and to realize it is a privilege not a right. I am really glad that I

volunteered at the Kawan centre I plan go again and bring along my friends and family members.

Conclusion

The Hope Givers project have fostered my communication, social skills, time management and
teamwork. It also fostered a sense of love and giving in me. I felt that it is really a meaningful
experience not because it was required and part of MPU3412: Co-curriculum paper but it warms
my heart from doing community project when I see smiles on people's face I have helped. By just
giving food to the homeless and needy, or contributing little time of mine and money to the
community will totally make a difference in our society.
