Question 1a) Focus of Reflection: Learning Experience

Throughout this project, and especially visiting Penang Handicap welfare Association, had made me

realized that there are many others in the world that need help and do not have the opportunity and privileges

that I have; and it made me understand that I should be humble in life and help others as much as I can. During

the event, I’ve learned to not be shy and be daring to speak to others. What really drive me to have the guts to

speak to strangers was me telling myself, “You are doing this to help others.” because of this phrase, I was

brave to approach others and represent PHWA and ask others to help. During the planning stage of the project,

as the team leader I’ve learned to be the middle man of everything and try to let/help everyone work together as

a team and not have any civil conflict.

Question 1b) Focus of Reflection: Personalization

The most important think I’ve learn throughout this project was I realized that as the team leader, you

cannot slack off. I am responsible to make sure everything is on par, and I need to be ahead of everyone else;

because other members will come to you for questions and advise on their part. Another point I’ve learned as

the leader was to not be the big man and allow others to shine, example instead of nagging them and telling

them what to do, I approached them and ask them to give me their ideas; and this allow each member to

contribute and be apart of the team. However when there are too many opinions, it is necessary for me to step

up and make the decision, and this is also something I’ve learned.

Question 2a) Ability to Reflect: Describe the initial position or starting point.

During the first meeting, our group’s initial plan was to raised fund for an organization called saved our

strays (SOS). This organization was suggested by one of the team member as she has pass experience working

with them. Throughout the stages of planning, the group had then change the organization to PHWA because

we felt that they need more help, and we might run into troubles at the event location by bring animals there.

Not only was the organization changed, but the event location was changed as well. It was suppose to be at Hin
Bus Depot, however the person in charge informed us that they do not allow fund raising; therefore we later

hosted our event at Occupy Beach Street. There are also some changes in food item, one of the original food

item was Nasi Lemak, however that item was substituted by muffins because the cost of muffin was cheaper

than Nasi Lemak. In drinks, we have substituted lemonade with Nescafe and 100 plus because the cost of

lemonade was too high.

Question 2b) Ability to Reflect: Describe the experience and the effect(s) on the initial position.

My experience in the changes on the initial position was learning to go with the flow. In a project, not

everything can proceed 100% according to plan, therefore it was challenging to find alternatives and to also

stay on track. During the food planning stage, we often drift away by brainstorming the idea to make breads and

other more technical pastries; and it was important for me as the leader to say that we should keep it simple and

doable so that everybody stays on track and do not make the project harder than it should be. It was also a

challenge when I had to explain to a certain member of the group that the majority has decided to substitute her

nasi lemak with muffin because the cost was too high, as it took me a while to properly plan on how to speak to

her without making her feel upset. I’ve also learned to let others finish their statement before you make any

opinion, one example was when the suggestion of selling energy drinks came up, I was against it because I felt

that no one will like sugary drinks; however, I kept that statement in mind and did not say it out loud. Few

seconds later, the suggester explained because there are going to be people doing zumba dance and biking

activities, therefore selling energy drink was a great idea!

Question 2c) Ability to Reflect: Summarize the present position

After the event was over, I’ve learned to be humble and be glad on what I have after visiting PHWA.

The children/Adults in the home are beyond what one could imagine. To be honest I am a person with a big

head, and somethings think I am the dominant one in my surroundings. When I was at PHWA a child who is a

teenager took my hand and started rotating in circles, the care taker William explained to me that it is his way

of asking me to play with him. At that moment I didn’t know how to react as I was stunned to see a human

being not having the conscious like I do, and at the moment I realized that I am lucky to have what I have. Ever

since the project was over, whenever I go to a restaurant that has a charity box; I will feel happy to just donate
some of the coins I have to help a charity organization. For example the dim sum restaurant I go to every

Sunday was PHWA’s charity box, and I will always donate the coins I receive after paying the bill. In

conclusion, I’ve learned to be humble, patient, and have a loving heart towards others.

Question 2d) Ability to Reflect: Outline how the experience have influenced your outlook for the future

Looking at the future, some of the group members want to continue doing this project once in a while.

We are still not sure if we are going to be working with the same organization, but what we do know is that

there are many others in the world that needs help. Among our group, I am still elected as team leader and will

help organize future event in popup markets to raise funds for charity organizations that are in need. I plan to

survey on how many charity organizations there are in Penang and I plan to visit them one by one and

understand what they are in need for just like PHWA needed us to raise fund so they can buy new beds and

repaint their walls to provide a better home for the children. Most importantly is I feel very satisfied when I

fulfilled one’s need, I enjoy the feeling of knowing that I’ve helped others and made their life better.
