Isobars Examples Difference between
Isotopes and Isobars
This section will explain This section will provide
a few examples of This section will state
what isobars are.
isobars. the difference between
isotopes and isobars.
01 Isobars
Isobars
Atoms of chemical elements having same atomic
mass but different atomic number are called isobars.
Atomic mass = number of protons + number of neutrons
Therefore, atomic mass of an atom is equal to number of nucleons present in the nucleus.
Isobars always have different atomic structures because of
difference in atomic number.
The number of neutrons make up the difference. Hence, they
are always chemically different but they have the same
atomic masses. Isobars have different chemical properties.
Since the atomic mass of isobars are same, physical
properties may be similar.
02 Examples
Argon Calcium
Z = 18 Z = 20
Atomic mass = 40
Argon Potassium
Z = 18 Z = 19
Atomic mass = 39
Cobalt Nickel
Z = 27 Z = 28
Atomic mass = 58
