SECTION A: ORTHOPAEDICS
Question 1
A 65 year old sustained a supracondylar fracture of the right femur following a
motor vehicle accident (MVA) one (1) week ago. The patient is managed on
traction and is awaiting open reduction and internal fixation. The patient is
receiving physiotherapy.
1.1 Explain the stage of bone healing for this patient, at this stage of recovery after
the injury. (3)
1.2 Explain the precautions that has to be considered during treatment of this patient.

1.3 Discuss a holistic Physiotherapy program for the patient at this stage of recovery
after the injury. (20)

SECTION C: ORTHOPAEDIC MANUAL THERAPY
Question 1
Mrs Dlamini is a 70 year old female who consulted a physiotherapist complaining
of back pain and poor balance. She had a pelvic fracture one (1) year ago and
she has been smoking cigarettes for 50 years. She has also been diagnosed with
osteoporosis.
1.1 Explain the risk factors for osteoporosis under the following headings:
1.1.1 Hormone levels. (5)
1.1.2 Dietary factors. (5)
1.1.3 Lifestyle choices. (5)

Mr X has been diagnosed with a cervical disc prolapse.
2.1 Describe, in detail, the objective information that you expect to obtain from Mr X

Mr E sustained a traumatic below knee amputation during a motor vehicle
accident.

A 67 year old patient has been diagnosed with a peripheral vascular disease
(PVD) after experiencing extreme pain and paralysis in her left lower limb.
2.1 Name any two (2) other symptoms (except the ones mentioned in the case
study) that you would expect the patient to present with. (2)
2.2 Discuss the PVD-pain scale grading that should be used during the assessment
of this patient. (8)
Question 3
A 35 year old female sustained third degree burn wounds during a house fire. The
patient received a skin graft over the largest part her upper torso and is
subsequently extremely scared of receiving physiotherapy. She can only tolerate
20 minutes of physiotherapy, twice a day.
3.1 Discuss the physiotherapy treatment approach that should be used to provide
optimal treatment for the patient in the limited time period. (6)
3.2 Explain to the patient how she should position herself in the ward during the day.
