Gravitation Revision

1. How does the weight of an object vary with respect to mass and radius of the earth? In a
hypothetical case, if the diameter of the earth becomes half of its present value and its
mass becomes four times of its present value, then how would the weight of any object
on the surface of the earth be affected?
2. A force of 20 N acts upon a body whose weight is 9.8 N. What is the mass of the body
and how much is its acceleration? Take g = 9.8 m/s2.
3. Is the force of gravity greater on a piece of iron on a piece of wood if both have the same
mass?
4. When a stone is thrown vertically upwards, its velocity is continuously decreased. Why?
5. If the small and big stones are dropped from the roof of a house simultaneously, they
will reach the ground at the same time. Why?
6. The earth attracts an apple. Does the apple also attract the earth? If it does, why does
the earth not move towards the apple?
7. Mention any two phenomena that the universal law of gravitation was able to explain.
8. The volume of 10g of a substance is 50 cm3. If the density of water is 1 g/cm3, will the
substance float or sink?
9. Define density. State its SI unit.
