Gravitation
1. What will be the weight of a body if it is raised above the earth equal
to its radius?
We know that W=mg Here we can see weight of a specific body
depends on the value of “g” which itself depends on how far the body is
from the center of the earth. Value of “g” follows an inverse square law
with distance which is given as

It can be seen that “g” is inversely proportional to the square of

distance from the center of the earth while keeping other parameters
constant. It means if the distance is doubled, then the value of “g”
decreases by a factor of 4. Thus weight of a body also decreases to one
fourth.
2. Define orbital velocity?
The minimum velocity required to make a
satellite orbit (move around) the earth is called
orbital velocity.

3. Moon is attracted by the earth, why it does

not fall on earth?
Moon is attracted by the earth yet it does not hit the earth due to its
tangential velocity. It is attracted inwards by the earth and this
gravitational force provides centripetal acceleration to the moon to keep
orbiting the earth without falling onto the earth.
4. Why the water does not fall out of a bucket when it is whirled?
When water containing bucket is whirled, the water’s inertia wants to
keep the water traveling in the straight path but gravity acting on it
causing it to fall downward path that will eventually hit the earth. 1
However, when the water is falling, the bucket is also falling with it,
catching the water. It keeps the bucket and water moving in a circular

path without falling. This thing happens only when bucket is whirled at a
very high speed because at high speed centripetal acceleration becomes
greater than free fall acceleration.
5. Write down mathematical form of law o universal gravitation?
Mathematical form of law of universal gravitation is

6. Write down some uses of artificial satellite.

Some uses of artificial satellite are:
 Wireless communication
 Scientific research
 Intelligence
 Weather forecasting etc.
7. What do you mean by gravitational field strength?
Gravitational force per unit mass is called gravitational field strength. It
is 10N/kg on earth which means that if a body has a mass of 1kg, then it
would be attracted towards the earth with a force of 10N.
8. A body is placed at the center of earth, what amount of force will be
experienced by that body?
We know that mass attracts mass. When a body is placed at the center
of the earth, then it is surrounded by earthly mass in all the directions so
body would be pulled equally in all the directions and net force on the
body would be zero.
