Nota de Aula - Food, Drinks and Quantities
Nota de Aula - Food, Drinks and Quantities
DEFINITIONS:
FOOD – Food is anything that people or animals eat.
DRINK – Drink is any kind of liquid that people or animals swallow as part of their diet.
EATING HABITS - When you talk about your eating habits you usually describe what you eat and drink
during a regular day, describing your meals and snacks. Food is divided into food groups (fruits,
vegetables, meat and fish, grains, dairy products, bakery products, eggs, and sweets), remember to tell
about your drinks (milk, tea, fruit juice, coffee, soda, and water).
HEALTHY DIET
When we talk about following a healthy diet, it is very important to pay attention not only on what we eat
and drink but on the amount of each food or drink. We should be generous and vary on fruits and
vegetables and greens. We should have a source of protein every day, but we should avoid fatty options.
Grains, starchy products and nuts are also important, but we need smaller portions of them. It is also
important to have some calcium in our diet, so dairy products must be part of our meals, we usually have
them for breakfast or on our snacks. Fats, oils and sweets are necessary, but in very small portions. And
we should always avoid salt. It is important to see the nutrients in the food we eat and drink, vitamins,
fibers, must be present in our daily life. And never forget to drink plenty of water, at least six
glasses/cups, or two litters a day.
QUANTIFIERS
The quantity, or amount, of a "thing" can be expressed by numbers (exact quantity) or by quantifiers
(expression/adverbs of quantity), which give us an approximate quantity. The "things" which quantities
are expressed can be countable (the exact amount can be expressed only by numbers) or uncountable
(when we need a measure unit with the number to express the exact quantity). The quantifiers used
differ if the noun is countable or uncountable.
COUNTABLE NOUNS
Countable nouns are those nouns that can have the quantity expressed by numbers. We can
characterize the unit. Countable nouns have singular and plural forms.
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
Uncountable nouns are those nouns that need to have a measure unit to expresss the quantity with
numbers. We cannot characterize the unit. Uncountable nouns just have the singular form.
