Keeping Standards up-to-date

Standards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and
systems. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and new
editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued. Standards may
also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves they are using a
current Standard, which should include any amendments which may have been
Accessed by HYDER CONSULTING PTY LTD on 05 Apr 2006

published since the Standard was purchased.

Detailed information about Standards can be found by visiting the Standards Australia
web site at www.standards.com.au and looking up the relevant Standard in the on-line
catalogue.
Alternatively, the printed Catalogue provides information current at 1 January each
year, and the monthly magazine, The Australian Standard, has a full listing of
revisions and amendments published each month.
We also welcome suggestions for the improvement in our Standards, and especially
encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or
ambiguities. Contact us via email at mail@standards.com.au, or write to the Chief
Executive, Standards Australia International Ltd, PO Box 1055, Strathfield,
NSW 2135.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 99184.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee MT/2, Copper and Copper Alloys, to supersede AS 2738.1 — 1984,
AS 2738.2 — 1984 and AS 2738.3 — 1984.
This Standard is the result of a consensus among Australian and New Zealand representatives
on the Joint Committee to produce it as an Australian Standard.
This revision contains listings of designations and chemical composition limits for copper and
copper alloy refinery, wrought, ingot and cast products in general use in Australia. In this
edition the alloy designations have been changed from the three-digit numbering system to
the Unified Numbering System (UNS) comprising five digits preceded by the letter C.
There are no equivalent International Standards (ISO) that list designations and chemical
compositions of copper and copper alloy products.
The term ‘informative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. An ‘informative’ appendix is for information and guidance only.

1.3 DESIGNATION SYSTEMS

1.3.1 General For copper refinery alloys, the designations comprise the letters Cu
followed by a hyphen and additional characters which indicate the refining process. For
wrought and cast coppers and copper alloys, the designations are in accordance with the
Unified Numbering System. Wrought coppers and alloys are grouped in accordance with
Clauses 1.3.2.1 to 1.3.2.7 and cast copper alloys are grouped in accordance with
Clauses 1.3.3.1 to 1.3.3.6.
As an exception, a UNS designation is not available for tin-bearing copper which is
designated 149 (see Table 3.1).

1.3.2 Wrought alloys

1.3.2.1 Coppers (C10000 to C15900) Coppers contain a minimum of 99.3% copper.
1.3.2.2 High copper alloys (C16000 to C19900) High copper alloys have a copper content
within the range 96% to 99.3%, and do not fall into other copper alloy groups.
1.3.2.3 Brasses (C20000 to C49900) Brasses are alloys containing zinc as the principal
alloying element, but may contain other alloying elements such as iron, aluminium, nickel,
lead, tin and silicon. They comprise three main groups, as follows:
(a) Copper-zinc (C20000 to C29900).
(b) Copper-zinc-lead (leaded brasses) (C30000 to C39900).
(c) Copper-zinc-tin (tin brasses) (C40000 to C49900).

element other than zinc or nickel. They comprise three main groups, as follows:
(a) Copper-tin-phosphorus (phosphor bronzes) (C50000 to C59900).
(b) Copper-aluminium (aluminium bronzes) (C60000 to C64500).
(c) Copper-silicon (silicon bronzes) (C64600 to C66300).
1.3.2.5 Miscellaneous copper-zinc alloys (C66400 to C69900) The miscellaneous copper-
zinc alloys are alloys which do not fall into the categories of Clause 1.3.2.3.
1.3.2.6 Copper-nickel alloys (C70000 to C72900) Copper-nickel alloys are alloys with
nickel as the principal alloying element, with or without other alloying elements present.
1.3.2.7 Copper-nickel-zinc alloys (nickel silvers) (C73000 to C79900) The nickel silvers
are alloys which contain zinc and nickel as the principal and secondary alloying elements,
with or without any other alloying elements present.
1.3.3 Cast alloys
1.3.3.1 Coppers and copper alloys (C80000 to C82990)

1.4 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

1.4.1 Specific limits The method of expressing the limits of each specified element or
impurity in a copper or a copper alloy, in terms of the number of decimal places, shall be in
accordance with Table 1.1.
NOTE: The percentage content of elements shown as ‘REM’ (remainder) is normally calculated by
difference.
1.4.2 Unnamed elements The specified limits contained in the chemical composition
tables in Sections 2, 3 and 4 of this Standard do not preclude the possible presence of other
unnamed elements. However, analysis shall regularly be made for the minor elements listed
in the tables, plus all major elements except one. The major element which is not analysed
shall be determined by difference between the sum of those elements analysed and 100%.
NOTE: By agreement between the purchaser and the supplier, analysis may be required and limits
established for elements not specified.

Standards Australia
Standards Australia is an independent company, limited by guarantee, which prepares and publishes
most of the voluntary technical and commercial standards used in Australia. These standards are
developed through an open process of consultation and consensus, in which all interested parties are
invited to participate. Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commonwealth government,
Standards Australia is recognized as Australia’s peak national standards body.

Australian Standards
Australian Standards are prepared by committees of experts from industry, governments, consumers
and other relevant sectors. The requirements or recommendations contained in published Standards
are a consensus of the views of representative interests and also take account of comments received
from other sources. They reflect the latest scientific and industry experience. Australian Standards are
kept under continuous review after publication and are updated regularly to take account of changing
technology.

International Involvement
Standards Australia is responsible for ensuring that the Australian viewpoint is considered in the
formulation of international Standards and that the latest international experience is incorporated in
