creating marled fabric:
We held 4 strands of sock weight yarn together to make a
chunky fabric, and a marled effect. You could achieve a similar
gauge with other weights. Try the following mix of strands:
• 1 DK / worsted weight + 2 sock weight
• 1 DK / worsted weight + 1 sock weight + 2 lace weight
• 2 sock weight + 3-4 lace weight
To knit with multiple strands at once, simply hold them
together and knit as though they were a single strand.

pattern:
This hat is knit in the round from brim to crown. It is knit
inside out, and once the knitting is completed you turn the hat
so the reverse stockinette (purl) side is out.
Using smaller needles, and 4 strands of sock-weight yarn
(or equivalent), cast on 52 (56, 60, 64, 68) sts, PM and join for
working in the round.
Work 4 (5, 6, 7, 8) rounds in 1x1 rib (k1, p1 around).
Change to larger needles.
Knit until work measures 5.0 (5.5, 6, 7, 7.5)” from cast-on. For
a slouchier hat, work an additional 1-2” before decreasing.
To create an ombre effect, change one or more of the yarns every
4-6 rounds, gradually blending from colour to colour.

crown decreases:
Switch to DPNs (or the magic loop method) when there are
too few stitches to fit comfortably on the circular needle.
Decrease round 1: [k1, k2tog] to last 1 (2, 0, 1, 2) sts, knit to end
[35 (38, 40, 43, 46) sts]
Knit 4 rounds.
Decrease round 2: [k2tog] to last 1 (2, 0, 1, 2) sts, knit to end
[18 (20, 20, 22, 24) sts]
Knit 2 rounds.
Decrease round 3: [k2tog] around [9 (10, 10, 11, 12) sts]
Break yarns, leaving an 8” tail. Draw the yarn tail through
remaining live stitches and pull tight. Weave in ends on the
stockinette side (WS) before turning the reverse stockinette
(purl) side to face out. Block your hat and add a colourful pom
pom to top it all off!
