ABE 10 SURVEYING

Laboratory Exercise #2
Taping on Level Ground
Objectives

To determine the horizontal length of a line over smooth and level ground with the tape.

Equipment: Steel tape, plumb bob, ranging rods, wooden pegs, chaining pins

Procedure:

1. Locate the polygon that is to be measured (as directed by the instructor-in-charge)

2. Place range poles/rods behind each point. Ensure unobstructed line of sight for every line to be
measured.
3. Record distance between points by pacing only.
4. Record distance between points by using steel tape only. Use 5 meter tape lengths only.
5. The tape must be held as close to level as you can and on the line while making measurements.
6. Record the temperature if necessary.
7. If the line is longer than the tape, an intermediate point or points must be set on line and two or
more measurements must be made and recorded separately in the field book.
8. Record all data; draw a detailed sketch of the polygon and surrounding area with each point of
the polygon labeled.
