Opening paragraph…WHY are you writing? Try to open with something memorable. Why are you
interested in the position? Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization (for
example, through the co-op or career center job board, company website or from someone you know).
Convince the reader to look at your resume.
Body (Sell) Paragraph(s)…WHY YOU? Call attention to elements of your background (education,
leadership, experience) that are relevant to the position you are seeking. Illustrate using two or three
examples that show case your backgrounds and skills. Use examples from work, volunteering, academic
projects or research experiences. Reflect your personality, motivation, enthusiasm and communication
skills.
Body Paragraph…WHY THEM? Do your research on the organization. Know their values, mission, etc.
Make sure you demonstrate how you can add value to their organization through your unique
experiences, personality and/or outlook.
Closing Paragraph…Summarize why you want to work for their organization and how can they get in
contact with you for an interview or if they may need additional information. Provide or refer to any
information specifically requested in the job advertisement that is not covered in your resume, such as
availability date/ mention the best method to contact you.
