PROJECT: The Conversation

Project outline:
You are tasked with creating a compelling and engaging 2-person conversation scene. The purpose of this
brief is to challenge your storytelling and filmmaking skills, focusing on capturing the essence of a
meaningful dialogue between two characters. The scene should demonstrate your ability to effectively utilize
visual storytelling, cinematography, sound design, and direction to create an impactful and memorable
sequence.

Scene Description:
Your scene will depict a conversation between two individuals in a setting of your choice. The location can
be indoors or outdoors, but it should be relevant to the context of the conversation and provide visual interest.
The dialogue between the characters should be engaging, emotionally charged, and drive the narrative
forward. The scene should capture the essence of their relationship, reveal character traits, or explore a
specific theme or conflict.

Guidelines and Requirements:

Duration: The scene should have a minimum duration of 2 minutes and a maximum of 5 minutes.

Characters: There should be two main characters engaged in the conversation. Develop their backgrounds,
motivations, and relationships to enhance the depth of the scene.

Dialogue: Craft meaningful and impactful dialogue that reflects the characters' personalities, drives the story
forward, and explores relevant themes. Focus on creating natural and authentic conversations.

Visuals: Pay careful attention to shot composition, framing, lighting, and camera movement. Utilise visual
elements to enhance the mood, tone, and dynamics of the scene. Experiment with different angles and
perspectives to create visual interest.

Sound Design: Incorporate appropriate sound effects, music, and ambient sounds to enhance the atmosphere
and emotional impact of the scene. Ensure the sound quality is clear and well-balanced with the dialogue.

Editing: Create a seamless flow between shots and ensure the pacing of the scene is appropriate. Experiment
with different editing techniques to enhance the narrative and emotional impact.

Performance: Work closely with actors to achieve authentic and compelling performances. Provide clear
direction to bring out the desired emotions and nuances in the scene.

Theme or Conflict: Explore a specific theme or conflict within the conversation that adds depth and
resonance to the scene. This could be related to relationships, identity, personal struggles, or societal issues.

On your blog:

 Watch and analyse at least two conversation scenes of your choice.


 Outline your group roles and develop your ideas. Make it clear what the purpose of the scene is and
what you are trying to say as film maker.
 Show a range of idea development using primary and secondary research. Look into how good dialog
is written.

 Look into and practice lighting techniques and camerawork and the use of sound.

 You also need to show detailed audience research & development showing and defining who these
programmes appeal to and research ways to reach an audience and promote.

elements of the film. Make sure you apply a range of shots. Aim to create a range of set ups.
