1. Choose and define ONLY one (1) from the three (3) given terms, and state how it
described Jose Rizal's life and works:
a. Nationalism
- Mostly Jose Rizal’s life and works are about how he fought for the
country’s freedom where he showed he would risk everything just for the
Filipino's independence and a better future. He has 2 novels called “Noli
Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” which he used to promote Filipino
cultural identity and to show awareness of what happened from Spanish
colonial rule.
2. Choosing ONLY one (1) out of the four (4) periods below to define popular
nationalism, how will you demonstrate it …
a. Today?
- I will not consider this event as "today", but this is one of the examples of
a popular nationalism that opened my eyes and made me realize that
when Filipinos unite, it will become scary. The event is called "Edsa
People Power" and it happened in 1986, and it was started by Cardinal
Jaime Sin, the Archbishop of Manila and he called upon Filipinos to
support the protest as Marcos claimed victory in the election. Many
people came along to EDSA to protest, but since there were many
people, the soldiers refused to clamp and instead chose to defect
allowing people to go inside the Malacañang and made Marcos escape to
Hawaii. It demonstrated the solidarity, perseverance, and dedication to
democratic values of the Filipino people.
3. In no more than five (5) sentences, justify whether the pre-colonial Philippines
was a nation or otherwise.
- Based on historians and scholars, there is no exact answer if the pre-
colonial Philippines is considered as a single nation. But based on what I
understand about the pre-colonial Philippines, there are a lot of events
that explain that the Philippines is a nation. Until then, there was a
hierarchy of people like "Datu" that helps the people to be led in the right
direction, which is one of the examples. Another is the battle in Mactan,
Lapu-Lapu led the group and fought for our country. Even then, the first
Filipinos showed that the country is a nation.
