TO OUR
Earth Science Class
At the end of the lesson, you must be able to:
▪ Explain why the earth’s interior is hot
▪ Describe what happens after magma is
formed
▪ Describe the changes in mineral components
and texture of rocks due to changes in
pressure and temperature(Metamorphism)
Lesson 1

Why is the interior of the Earth

hot?
What are the sources of the
Earth’s internal heat?
The Earth’s internal heat is
emitted from its layers and
is what drive planetary
processes such as volcano
and mountain formation.
What is accretional and
differentiation energy?
Radioactive Decay

The second source of the

Earth’s internal heat is
Radioactive Decay. It is the
process wherein nucleus of
unstable isotopes undergo decay
and transferred to other elements
nearby. This releases energy that
is converted to heat.
Lesson 2

How is magma formed?

What happens after magma is

formed?
Magma is a molten rock mixture
found below the Earth’s surface.
Magma is a mixture of a hot liquid
base called melt-minerals, solid
rocks and dissolved gases. It arises
from the lower part of the Earth’s
crust and the upper part of the
mantle. It’s most dominant
composition is silica (SiO2).
What happens after magma is
formed?
What happens to magma once it is formed?

1. magma rises to the surface forming lava

2. undergo plutonism and volcanism during cooling

3. Undergo the rock cycle

Lesson 3

Describe the changes in mineral

components and texture of rocks due to
changes in pressure and
temperature(Metamorphism)
Activity

Answer the following questions:

1. What are the two categories of the source of Earth’s internal heat?
Give examples.
2. How is the Earth's internal heat redistributed?
3. Cite three tectonic settings where magma is formed
4. Are there any significance or relations of magmatic formation and
their eventual rise to the shallower depths to our daily lives?
5. Describe how viscosity affects the movement of magma. Compare
the viscosity of basaltic and granitic magmas.
6. Define metamorphic grade.
7. Is it possible to find fossils in metamorphic rocks?
