Atomic Model Essay
My element is nitrogen. It is composed of seven electrons, seven
neutrons, and seven protons.There are two energy levels, two electrons on the
first energy level which is closer to the nucleus and five electrons on the
second energy level.Nitrogen is a non-metal and is a gas.Nitrogen is used in
the ecosystem for living organisms.Nitrogen is used in creating
ammonia.Nitrogen can also be found in foods,fertilizers,air, soil, and
plants.Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the atmosphere.Nitrogen is able to
turn into a metal by going through nitrogen fixation. It does not react with
other elements.Nitrogen is used in tire filling systems,stainless steel
manufacturing, aircraft fuel systems, and more.Nitrogen is non flammable or
explosive, which leads it to be a fire suppressant.
Nitrogen was discovered by Daniel Rutherford in 1772.Rutherford was a
Scottish chemist and physician.He performed an experiment that led to him
burning a candle in a tight space until it expanded.He named the gas “noxious
air”. It was named that until it was changed by another chemist who was
French and was named Jean-Antoine Chapital.The word nitrogen is derived
from ‘nitron’ and ‘genes’ which means nitre forming. An interesting fact about
nitrogen is that it can create multiple bonds within itself and other elements as
well.Nitrogen is odorless, colorless, and makes up about 3% of your body
weight.It can be used in explosives, poisons, and fertilizer.Nitrogen can be
found in fossil fuels and coal.
