Directions: Using information from class discussion, video and Ancient World History Textbook
(pages 408, 430 - 435) answer the following questions using a complete sentence

1. What is trade and what types of trading do people do?

2. Based on prior knowledge, how do you think trade has evolved through history? Provide some
examples of this

3. What are some things that allowed people in the past and present to trade with others? Think
about those people who live within the same village or neighborhood, those who live miles
apart, across the country and around the world when providing a response.

4. What was the Silk Road?

5. Provide a 4-box cartoon cell that depicts key components of the Silk Road. For each box, make
sure to include an image and brief description that explains your illustration. This question is

6. In addition to the movement of commodities and goods, trade routes provided the migration
and spread of what other things?

7. What similarities are found between the Silk Road and Modern-technology?

8. What elements are necessary for a mutually successful trade?

9. How do scarcity and abundance affect trade? Does this apply to both ancient and modern
times? Explain

10. Look at the passage on page 408. Select TWO key items you wish to trade and make sure to
explain/support your reasoning.

usefulness, rarity or beauty. For which of those reasons do you think people wanted this
porcelain flask? Explain

18. Looking at the primary source on page 434 about the Silk Cloth; What class of people do you
think were most likely to wear clothes made of silk?

19. Using the primary source on page 434 about the African Ivory Spoon; Why would people in
Europe or China need to trade to obtain ivory?

20. Answer the following question using the excerpt on page 435 from the Muslim traveler, Ibn
Battuta; Why did the people of Takadda need to produce copper rods?
