The Overuse of Slang

As a generation z child, I used to talk in slang very often, which was beginning to hinder

my ability to speak formally. Slang becomes more popular by the month as new terms are being

created and shared through multiple social media platforms like Tiktok, Twitter, or Instagram.

Once the shorter versions or abbreviated versions of words were started, everybody began using

them normally in their day-to-day conversations. Although many terms of slang are

unconsciously engraved into my vocabulary, I no longer favor that language or way of speaking.

Negative Effect of Slang:

Throughout highschool, I was always in honors writing classes which required many

writing assignments. Once I noticed myself unintentionally using slang words in my

essays, I knew that it was becoming an issue. I did not want to be dumb when I got older

and I knew that slang was a shortcut so that you would not have to say the full word

which is a lazy thing. To prevent this future outcome of me being braindead, I recently

decided to stop using slang, even when informally speaking to friends and family. I

wanted to practice my formal speaking and improve on sounding more knowledgeable

when I talk.
