Even if he doesn’t know it

by Genius1

Summary

Kuroko is smart, knows how to observe and understand others. But there’s one thing his
keen observation skills can’t pick up on. And that’s his dear captain, Akashi’s,
possessiveness over him. And Akashi would rather keep it that way.

The beginning

Akashi didn’t know how it came to being, this growing obsession of his phantom sixth man. It
scares him, because it is something that’s out of his control, a territory where his words are not
absolute and he cannot do anything to help the situation. However, he isn’t sure if he wants to at
all.

It started when aomine became abnormal enough to affect the team. He’d skip practice and ignore
his orders, always saying that it doesn’t matter since they’re going to win anyway.

Deep down, Akashi knew what was going on with aomine. He knew he was slowly losing
motivation for the one activity he loved and was good at, he knew. However, he couldn’t care less.
He didn’t care as long as they won, that’s all that mattered.

It was a Friday afternoon when they were about to start practicing for an upcoming game, when
they realized that aomine was once again missing from practice.
He didn’t care, he knew aomine’s skills. Therefore, he understood that aomine would do well even
if he didn’t practice.

He had been practicing his aim when Kuroko jogged up to him, face emotionless as usual
“Captain, aomine-san is missing again”
His voice steady and Akashi could feel his gaze, he could guarantee that anyone else would feel
creepy when being stared at those emotionless eyes.

Still not facing Kuroko, he continued taking the balls from the cart and shooting in the net
“He’ll be fine, Tatsuya”
He’d always had a soft spot for their sixth man, he looked so small and submissive.

Akashi didn’t see it, but kuroko’s eyebrows had furrowed, eyes swimming with an unknown
emotion.
“I would like to go and check on him, captain”

Turing to pick another ball, Akashi paused for a bit,

“I said he’ll be fine, Tatsuya. Get back to practice”
It was an order, and he knew Kuroko knew that. However, the other boy didn’t move from where
he was standing. Instead, he opened his mouth to speak again, a little louder this time

“Captain! I don’t think that what you’re currently doing is healthy for the team. Especially,
aomine. You’re being too insensitive”

Everyone had turned their heads to watch them, the only sound that was heard was the ball
dropping on the floor from the net after Akashi had shot it. He finally turned to face Kuroko, eyes
sharp and brows frowned
“Perhaps I did not make myself clear previously, Tatsuya. I believe I told you to let it go, that was
an order. We don’t need aomine at practice as long as we win the next game, now get back to
practice. That’s also an order, my words are absolute”

His tone was low, but he saw Kuroko slightly lower his eyes. Whatever guts he had just now,
leaving. What was up with him anyway? How dare he question his words? All for aomine?

Akashi could feel the flicker of something coming to life within him. He didn’t understand why,
but having Tatsuya stand up to HIM for the sake of another person made him feel inexplicable
anger.

The second time Akashi felt this way, was on the day of their last game in middle school. Before
said game, Kuroko had always nagged him about how the team was falling apart now that
everyone wanted to play solo.

Akashi couldn’t accept the truth that was presenting itself, he wouldn’t accept it. They’re winning,
they always win, so why was his dear Tatsuya angry about their progress? So what if everyone
wanted to practice on their own, hone their skills by themselves? It just made them even stronger.

Come to think of it, his Tatsuya was the only person that had the guts to press on even after being
given an order. Thinking back to kuroko’s rigid posture when he’d told him to attend rakuzan with
him, he looked so cute. Being defiant and just looking so reluctant to disobey the order. It
definitely made Akashi angry, but he’d let it go, only for his Tatsuya though.

It had been their last day at Teiko middle school, he had gathered all five members of the
generation of miracles on their usual practice court. Honestly, he didn’t know how they’d obtained
the name and he absolutely despised it, but it was public opinion after all.
The six of them, except Kuroko, were standing together and he asked
“What schools do you plan to attend?”

Midorima with his lucky item of the day in his left hand, pushed his glasses up with the other hand
and answered
“Shutoku high”
And he left it at that, not making any further explanations, the others followed suit

“Touou academy”
“Kaijo high!”
“Yosen high”

He didn’t care where the other members went, as long as they played against each other in the end
and didn’t let anyone become stronger than them. Though, he was quite peeved that his Tatsuya
was absent. He had in mind what school he’d like Kuroko to attend, of course it’d be with him.
After all, no one else was capable of understanding his Tatsuya like him.

“It doesn’t matter if we’re going to attend different schools, in fact, it’s a good thing. However, I
will not tolerate any one from this team being defeated, no matter what school it is. You will
continue to practice, develop your skills and become stronger. And when the time comes, we will
play against each other. This is an order, and it will become a promise between us”

He eyed each and every one of them, gauging their reactions and waiting to see any defiance. Kise,
the ever so cheerful guy, raised his hand
“What about Kurokocchi?”
“Tatsuya has already made his choice, he will continue to play his basketball. However, he is still a
part of this oath”

After they had gone back to the graduation ceremony, he scanned the crowd for the small, blue-
haired boy. Kuroko might be able to hide his presence from others, but not him. Never him. He
didn’t see the said boy until the end of the ceremony when everyone were either heading home,
taking pictures, or thanking each other. The quiet boy was alone as usual, both hands on his side.
One of them holding a bouquet of flowers and for a moment, Akashi felt annoyed, thinking
thinking that some girl had given it to him until he realized that everyone else had been given a
bouquet of their own.

He walked towards the other, steps determined and filled with intentions.
“Tatsuya”
He spoke softly. Not low and threatening, not an order, a tone he had reserved only for his Tatsuya.
Kuroko turned around to face him, eyes staring at him, emotionless. And even then, he knew they
were analyzing him, observing.

“Yes, sei-chan?”
Akashi was sure, he was absolutely confident that his Tatsuya would follow him to Rakuzan high.
There was no reason not to, his Tatsuya must know better than anyone that Akashi is the only
person that can understand him well. Even better than Kuroko himself, so of course his Tatsuya
should agree.
He put his right palm on Kuroko’s shoulder, eyeing him, and when Kuroko stared back, he knew
Kuroko understood what he was trying to convey. So he started walking towards the back of the
school and not even a minute later, he heard footsteps behind him.

See?! Of course his Tatsuya understands him well too! It’s only natural, they were each other’s.
The thought made Akashi pause in his steps, barely hearing kuroko do the same. Where did such
an absurd thought come from? Is it really that strange though? Kuroko being his and vice versa.
Why was he about to tell kuroko to attend the same high school as him?

That’s right. It’s been there all along, that feeling of protectiveness everytime kuroko fell in a game
from being pushed by their opponents. That boiling anger when Kuroko tried to go against his
orders for aomine. Of course! Kuroko was his after all.

From the moment he’d hung that thread, and Kuroko decided to climb, he had accepted the
promise of being Akashi’s. Kuroko may not realize it now, but he must know. He definitely does.
That’s why he always did what Akashi ordered, despite being stubborn with others. That’s why
always followed Akashi and waited to be told what to do. And even though sometimes he goes
against Akashi’s orders, he was always reluctant to disobey. But that’s alright. For his Tatsuya,
he’d allow himself to be shouted at, disobeyed. As long as it’s his Tatsuya.

With this thought in mind, Akashi felt giddy for the first time in his boring life. He felt the thrill of
something else, something other than winning, something better. And that’s saying something,
especially for a person like Akashi.

And he couldn’t wait to explore more of this strange feeling.
