Drawing Practice

Weekly Exercise Topic 1 – Drawing

Overview

Not about being an artist;


Need to clearly and concisely
indicate how things are done;
A picture tells a thousand words;
Australian Standard 1100.301-
2008/Amdt 1-2011 is intended as a
basis of uniformity;
Ensures everyone can understand
conventions.

What You Must Have

• Scale rule Kent 62M or Staedtler 561 702AU or 961 80-2AS,


• Protractor, Compass, 300mm rule and set squares,
• Pencils HB and 2H Mechanical pencils are good,
• Sharpener and Rubber
• Stapiler,
• Coloured Pencils or coloured fine liners
• Black Fine Liner Pens in varying widths 0.2 – 1.5 Generally in a set,
• Graph paper 5mm square is best 1 mm becomes fussy

Drawing Sizes

Generally A1,
Often issued in A3 size
reduced.

Lines

Start thin, in 2D, to scale and fill in with


thicker;
Pencil (sharp) is good;
Allow space between items;
Centre Lines are:

Dimensioning

Lines should be thin and continuous;


Dimension figures immediately above and parallel;
Dimension in millimeters;
Post and columns to centrelines;
Walls to structural surface.

Lettering

Distinct uniform lettering to ensure production of good


legible prints;
Notes should be grouped not scattered;
No underlining, use bold;
Full stops should not be used;
Arrowhead pointer should touch point to the outline.

Use upper case in preference;


Try and keep it all in the same direction.

Scales

Block plans 1:500


General Plans 1:100 or 1:200;
Sections 1:20 or 1:50;
Details 1:10 or 1:5 or 1:1 for actual size;
Common to include scale on drawing.

Generally point to the top of the page;
Ensure all drawings are oriented the same way;
Not appropriate for sections or elevations.

Check before you insert one
Some more common ones.

Detail Drawings

Make them clear;


Draw in 2-D
Don’t try 3-D
Give items space;

The Drawing Process

Select scale:
 Gets a drawing size appropriate to page
 Allows detail to see what’s going on
Centre your drawing on the page
Rough out drawing with thin pencil outline of all major elements
 Avoid drawing minute detail or brick by brick at this stage
 Don’t forget to allow space between elements
Back line major elements with thicker line – pen or marker
 Make the drawing stand out
 Cut lines should be heavier than items beyond
 Now draw the minute detail once you are sure everything fits
 Hatch or colour major elements using accepted items
Finish the drawing
 Neat lettering, Scales, Titles, Legends, North points etc
