Today many students feel that they have too many things to do in one day. Many
of them really do not manage their time wisely and end up not completing their
homework or school projects on time. So, here I would like to give some suggestions
to students on how to manage time.
Firstly, students must change their attitude. Next, students should pay attention
in class. Thirdly, students must try to complete as much homework as possible during
school hours. Furthermore, students can make a ‘To do’ list.
Students ought to set their priorities right. Students should set a realistic target
for their coming examination. Furthermore, students can plan a personal timetable.
Students must also make time for rest and relaxation.
Students can join study groups. All students should seek help from parents,
teachers or friends if needed. Students should speak to the school counsellor if
necessary. Finally, students should be happy and healthy when they spend their time
wisely.

PAPER 2, PART 2: EXERCISE 4

1. Read the article below about part-time jobs.

Should students work part-time while studying?

By Ereen Nasir

With the increasing costs attached to the pursuit of higher education, working part-
time while studying has become a necessity for many students – be it for the sake of
covering daily expenses, paying for tuition or miscellaneous academic fees, or just for
extra allowances. This issue has become more and more apparent in our society
today. More than just being apparent, it has also become a dilemma for many students.
In this article, we will weigh the pros and cons to students taking up part-time jobs
while studying, along with a few pointers towards the end of this article.
Pros
The good thing about working part-time while studying is the fact that money will not
be the only thing which you will gain through working. It is also the great opportunities
which you can attain with first-hand experience in the marketplace that can help
prepare you for the real working world.
Learn how to work with and for other people as opposed to confining yourself to the
solitary pursuit of studying. Who knows you might even be able to gain some
experience in the field(s) in which you wish to venture into upon your graduation. If
you are able to find the correct job, it will give you an invaluable head start in your
career and you will have the upper hand the moment you graduate.
If you’re an international student seeking to work part-time while you study, you will
get to experience the language, culture and lifestyle of the people in your chosen

79
destination– first-hand. Working in a foreign country will give you a totally different
experience compared to when you work in your home country.
Cons
One of the down sides to working during your studies is that it takes up time. As a
student, this is one of your greatest assets especially when your course gets tougher
– you will need to allocate more of your day to research and revision. Besides that, the
ugly truth about part-time jobs is that you will rarely find a job which can help glamorize
your CV and allow you to miss a few working days to meet your assignment deadlines.

Effective time management for students
By Ahmad Zakwan
Students should speak to the school counsellor if
necessary. Finally, students should be happy and healthy when they spend their time
wisely.

The Kite Runner Book Review

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini has to be the most devastatingly beautiful book
I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Set in 20th century Afghanistan, it tells the story of
how a young boy’s friendship is tested by war and betrayal.

Amir, the son of a wealthy Afghan, shares a close friendship with their household
servant’s son, Hassan. But a fateful kite-flying competition tethers their bond, and as
war forces them to part ways, the boys’ lives take them on a journey of love and
redemption.

The book made me realise how precious yet fragile the relationships we build are; and
that we must always take a chance on our loved ones. It taught me the importance of
the people in our lives and how they shape us to be who we are.

The Kite Runner is a beautifully narrated tale, the writing just as simple as it is heart-
breaking, the characters realistically portrayed. I would definitely recommend this book
to those who enjoy character-driven stories set in troubled times.

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California is one of the world's most renowned
bridges. 1 Vehicles cross the bridge an average of forty-one million times each
year. Since it opened more than seventy years ago, the bridge has been used by about one
billion eight hundred million cars.

The bridge has always been painted "International Orange" because that colour blends
well with the natural environment. The colour also is easier to see in the heavy fog that often
covers the area. But the Golden Gate Bridge was not named for its orange colour. 2

The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean.
San Francisco and Marin County, California are connected by the Golden Gate Bridge.

Planning for the bridge began in the 1920s when the area around San Francisco was
growing. 3 Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer for the project. Work began in
1933. Mister Strauss wanted the most stringent safety measures ever seen in bridge
construction. The first usage of "hard helmets" to protect employees' heads and special
spectacles to protect their eyes were among them.

Under the bridge, a special safety net was suspended. During the construction, this net
saved the lives of nineteen men. However, eleven other workers were killed when they fell
from the bridge through the net. 4

105
The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937. It stretches across a distance of 1,280 metres
across the lake. Two thousand seven hundred thirty-seven metres is the overall length. It was
the largest suspension bridge in the world until 1964. 5 Today, the Golden Gate
Bridge is the ninth longest suspension bridge in the world.

After the Golden Gate Bridge was constructed, Joseph Strauss, the principal engineer,
penned a poem called "The Mighty Task is Done." 6

Digging into the past

Last year, Kate Marshall was given a very exciting opportunity – to help her father,
who’s a history lecturer, at a historical site! He was leading a team to dig up and explore the
area.

When they arrived, though, the site wasn’t quite what Kate had expected. 1 So,
the first job was to remove it all and prepare the land for digging. Says Kate, 'Dad hadn't warned
me I'd have to work so hard as soon as we got there!'

But when the site was completely cleared, the team found pieces of ancient pots on the
ground. 2 Kate's dad told them that the important pots were still under the ground.
And because no-one had touched them for centuries, the team would learn far more about their
history - but first they would have to dig deeper. Says Kate, 3 But we all knew
Dad was right!'

The site was divided into small squares, with a leader for each square, who told
everyone how to dig. 'That wasn't as easy as it sounded, either 'Kate reports. 'Instead of just
digging great big holes, we all had to dig really carefully, and remove small amounts of soil
each time. 4 So it made sense.'

‘My friends at home were really interested in what I was doing,' Kate explains. 'They
kept texting me to ask what I'd found. 5 But actually, we were looking for ordinary,
everyday objects that could tell us about the people who'd lived in the area centuries ago.'

In the end, though, Kate wasn't disappointed by what she found. 'One day, when I was
digging away, I found a stone with a strange shape. 6 Someone had obviously made

go to the nearby museum. So, I was pleased that at last, I'd found something interesting!'

two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

___________________________________________________________________________

International star Romany has just published a book about her life. Her story describes
how she dealt with personal problems and eventually realized her dream of becoming
a magician. Her book is a very honest account of her life. 1

As a child, Romany loved ballet. She was convinced that one day she would be
discovered and have a life on the stage. At the age of fifteen, she was given a role in
a show. 2 She managed to stay very slim but it was not good for her. She
developed a serious eating problem.

After that, she decided that ballet was not for her. She got a degree and got a job in
sales. 3 In her free time, she joined a circus club. Before long, she was
offered occasional jobs. 4 She was working all day, and spending all her
free time doing circus work. She became very stressed and tired and her eating
problems returned.

She knew that her life could not continue in this way. So she took a long look at her
life and thought about what she really wanted. She realized she really wanted to work
on stage. However, she wasn’t sure what to do. 5 But then she had an
idea. She quit her job and applied to the National Centre of Circus Arts to study magic.

Now Romany travels the world performing magic tricks on cruise ships. She is also
often asked to tell the story of her life. 6 Romany teaches them that life is
difficult for everybody. But if you have a dream and work hard to achieve it, anything

Ben and his family are planning to go to the beach for their weekend activity. Below are the
descriptions on six different beaches that Ben has found on internet. Read the texts below and
answer the questions that follow.

A. Holly Bay
The café here serves delicious meals and sandwiches! The water's calm in the
bay, perfect tor people wanting to swim across it-around 2 kms! However, it's very
deep, so is only suitable for strong swimmers. There are often sand artists here,
and horses for hire to take you along the beach.

B. Barmouth Beach
This beach often has displays of animals and birds - skilfully made from sand,
which you can also learn how to do. It's also the perfect place for lying in the sun-
or why not explore he beach paths on foot for an hour or two? The views are
fantastic.

C. Minton Strand
The sea here offers safe swimming and sailing, even for beginners, but there's still
plenty to do when you want a change from sunbathing. A teenagers' beach club
offers sports like cycle rides, volleyball and beach chess - great for everyone
getting to know each other!

D. Silver Sands
The beach has a sea temperature slightly higher than other coastal areas, and
with its gentle waves it's perfect for children. There's plenty to do, too, with play
leaders offering games to entertain younger ones, and surfing and sailing available
at all levels, including beginners. The snack bar is excellent, too.

E. Franscombe
This beach is popular with families with young children and people who aren't
strong swimmers, as the water is warm and not deep. Bring your own food to the
picnic area or try the great snacks at the café. However, the nearest car park is
quite a walk away.

F. Westley Beach
There are distance swimming, sailing and surfing sessions for people of all levels,
and the beach is also famous for sculptures made of sand, which artists display
every weekend! It's easily reached from the car park through a lovely wood, which
you can explore on foot when it gets cooler.

Part 3
You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct
answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

If you can read a clock, you can know the time of day. But no one knows what time
itself is. We cannot see it. We cannot touch it. We cannot hear it. We know it only by the way
we mark its passing. One way to think about time is to imagine a world without time. There
could be no movement, because time and movement cannot be separated. A world without time
could exist only as long as there were no changes. We know that time has passed when
something changes.

In the real world, changes never stop. Some changes happen only once in a while, like
an eclipse of the moon. Others happen repeatedly, like the rising and setting of the sun. When
people began to count such events, they began to measure time. In early human history, the
only changes that seemed to repeat themselves evenly were the movements of objects in the
sky. The most easily seen result of these movements was the difference between light and
darkness.

The sun rises in the east and it moves across the sky and sinks in the west. The
appearance and disappearance of the sun was even and unfailing. The periods of light and
darkness it created were the first accepted periods of time. We have named each period of light
and darkness: one day.

People saw the sun rise higher in the sky during the summer than in winter. They
counted the days that passed from the sun's highest position until it returned to that position.
They counted three hundred and sixty-five days. We now know that is the time Earth takes to
move once around the sun. We call this period of time a year.

Early humans also noted changes in the moon. As it moved across the night sky, they
must have wondered: Why did it look different every night? Why did it disappear? Where did
it go? Even before they learned the answers to these questions, they developed a way to use the
changing faces of the moon to tell time. The moon was "full" when its face was bright and
round and "new" when it was almost entirely dark. The early humans counted the number of
times the sun appeared between full moons. They learned that this number always remained
the same, about twenty-nine suns. Twenty-nine suns equalled one moon. We now know this
period of time as one month.

Early humans hunted animals and gathered wild plants. They moved in groups or tribes
from place to place in search of food. Then, people learned to plant seeds and grow crops. They
learned to use animals to help them work, and for food. They found they no longer needed to
move from one place to another to survive. As hunters, people did not need a way to measure
time. As farmers, however, they had to plant crops in time to harvest them before winter. They
had to know when the seasons would change. So, they were forced to develop calendars. No
one knows when the first calendar was developed. But it seems possible that it was based on
moons, or lunar months.

When people started farming, the wise men of the tribes became very important. They
studied the sky. They gathered enough information so they could know when the seasons would
change. They announced when it was time to plant crops.

C by measuring the length of the days
D with the introduction of early calendars

23 How would an early human have defined a 'month'?

A the number of days between a full moon and a new moon

B the number of days for the sun and moon to be seen together
C the number of days between eclipses of the moon
D the number of days from one phase of the moon's cycle and then back to the

Alive is a 2020 South Korean zombie movie directed by Cho Il-hyung. This fast-
paced Korean thriller film proves there are still fresh stories to tell when it comes to
the walking dead. The story is about a laid-back gamer who is homebound without
food, weapons and there are zombies knocking on his door. It is the ideal movie for
you to watch if a real-life pandemic alone is not enough to convince you to lock
yourself down.

B - FAST AND FURIOUS 8: THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS

The latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise does not disappoint with its
over-dramatised races, unimaginable stunts and explosive high-adrenaline filled
scenes. The Fate of the Furious sees retired criminal Dominic Torrento being
blackmailed by cyber-terrorist Cipher to betray his crew. The movie has racing cars,
high-speed chases and spectacular stunts throughout which make it incredibly
entertaining, delivering the stuff the fans want and enjoy immensely.

C - SONIC THE HEDGEHOG

Sonic the Hedgehog is a kid-targeted action/adventure movie starring the iconic
Sega video game character. Written by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, it turns Sonic,
the famous blue hedgehog, into a superhero of a kind, making him an alien from
another world with a special ability that is sought after by those who would use it for
evil. In the movie, Sonic never feels abandoned, but he is lonely hence the movie’s
message, which revolves around the importance of companionship.

D - MULAN
The animated Mulan stands out from Disney’s other lineup of princess movies for a
very specific reason; no man in her life solves all her problems. Set in China during
the Han dynasty, Mulan is the story of a young Chinese girl with a strong spirit. To
protect her family’s honour, Mulan steals her father's armour and joins the army in
his stead, pretending to be a man. Mulan is a character whose motivation comes
from duty, honour, loyalty, and a sense of patriotism.

E - ALADDIN
In Aladdin, the titular character and his pet monkey, Abu, run into Princess Jasmine,
who disguises as a handmaid as she wishes to experience life outside the palace
walls of Agrabah. In a twist of fate, Aladdin finds a lamp and meets the all-powerful
Genie, who grants three wishes to whoever rubs the lamp. This live-action version of
the Disney animated classic does a very good job capturing most of what made the
original movie so magical. It retains many of the original songs while expanding on
the story and the characters.
