What is the scope of Pakistan Studies and why is it considered as important
subject?

Pakistan Studies is a subject that aims at enhancing student’s knowledge about


history, culture, politics and geography of Pakistan and to inculcate patriotism
in the hearts of students so that they may become a good citizen. Pakistan
studies was introduced as compulsory subject along with islamiat at the
secondary and higher secondary level during the Bhutto regime in 1970s. One
of the main objectives of the curriculum of Pakistan studies at secondary level is
to prepare the students to become good citizens and to understand the human
values and political system of Pakistan. Its introduction as a separate mandatory
subject aimed to create patriotism among the youth and awareness of Pakistan
ideology.

The scope of Pakistan studies is multi-dimensional. It highlights the brief


history of Pakistan, its geography, geo-politics, culture, society, religion,
economy and other social issues. Considering its immense importance, the
academic council in its last meeting, guided over by the worthy president of the
international Islamic university, Islamabad, decided to introduce a 2-year MA
degree programme in “Pakistan studies” at the department of history, faculty of
social sciences (FSS). Undoubtedly, Pakistan studies as an academic discipline
has been gaining importance both in terms of its employment opportunities and
better future. Graduates of Pakistan studies find good opportunities in teaching
profession at different educational institutions, colleges and universities and
also employment in civil services of Pakistan. Moreover graduates of this
discipline find employment opportunities in various administrative, cultural,
financial and research institutions. To promote and understand ideology of
Pakistan, struggle of muslims for emergence of an ideological state, and efforts
for achieving the goals of islamization. To enhance the understanding of
physical and human aspects of Pakistan geography.

Being a religious subject for muslim students studying in Pakistani schools, it is


considered to be important in character building. Major findings of the study
suggest that Islamic education helps the students become good citizen and plays
a positive role as agents of social change in their local communities. It is
important to know everything related to this subject to become aware of history
and the events that took place in the present. The main purpose of the subject is
to promote national integration, cohesion, solidarity and harmony among the
new generation. The main objective of the creation of Pakistan is to establish a
free Islamic society having its own identity and government, practising its own
social principles and religion and inviting the Muslims of the world, particularly
and others generally to adopt the Islamic way of life. It is also important in
character building. Islamic education also helps the students to become good
citizen and plays a positive role as agents of social change in their local
communities.
