Learning outcomes:
1 Understand the various fields which structure the Computer Science discipline at
an academic and industrial level
2 Understand how new applications areas emerge from technology development and
user needs
3. Familiarise with the main information sources for the various fields of the
discipline, including societies, interest groups and conferences

Plagiarism is presenting somebody else’s work as one's own. It includes copying


information directly from online resources or books without referencing the material;
submitting joint coursework as an individual effort; copying another student’s
coursework; purchasing coursework from someone else and submitting it as own work.
Suspected plagiarism will be investigated and if found to have occurred will be dealt
with according to the procedures set by the University. All material copied or amended
from any source must be referenced correctly according to the chosen reference style.

The coursework will be submitted for electronic plagiarism checks.

Coursework Submission Requirements

• An electronic copy of the coursework should be submitted on Moodle before the


deadline

• The last uploaded version submitted before the deadline will be marked

• The format of the coursework is a single PDF document containing a research article
on a Computer Science topic consisting between 800 and 1500 words excluding the
references
• The limit of the file size is 100 MB

• The PDF document should be virus-free, not protected by a password or corrupted,


otherwise it will be treated as null submissions

• Feedback about the coursework will be available from Moodle

Coursework Specification:

1. Select a topic from one of the following areas of Computer Science (other Computer
Science topics will not be accepted):
1. Edge Computing
2. Computer Networks
3. Computer Security
4. Information Retrieval
5. Data Analytics
6. Mobile Operating Systems

2. Write a Research Article on the selected topic. It is expected to meet the following

criteria: - The research article is individual work conducted independently by the

student - The size of the research article is between 800 and 1500 words, excluding

references - Clearly identifies a specific Computer Science topics, application or innovation

- The article should be written in academic language and should refer to the academic
literature in the specific field which is relevant to the topic

- The article should use referencing and in-text citation using a consistent referencing style

- The article should include a coherent literature review, a well-presented main discussions or
arguments, a set of relevant conclusions and a table of references

Deliverable:

A single PDF document of a research article with the following content:


1. Title page
2. Introduction to the topic
3. Literature review
4. Main discussions/arguments
5. Conclusions
6. References
Marking Scheme:

The coursework will be marked according to the following marking scheme:

Grading criteria

70-100% All requirements completed to an excellent standard


60-69% All requirements completed. However, there are a number of minor deficiencies in
significant areas.

50-59% All requirements completed. However, significant improvements could be made in


many areas.

40-49% All requirements completed. However, significant improvements could be made in


all areas.

30-39% All requirements attempted but the overall level of understanding and performance is
poor.

0-29% There are requirements missing or completed to a very inadequate standard which
indicates a very poor or non-existent level of understanding.
