Stylistics Analysis of Suicide Scars

Introduction: The objective of this paper is to explore the denotative and

connotative meaning of the poem Suicide Scars.

Suicide Scars
By: Trish Spencer
I look at myself in the mirror wondering.
Wondering what happened to the girl I used to be.
Wondering why there are scars on my wrist.
Why I did this to myself.
Then I think back to when my whole world was crashing down.
I seem to realize that these scars are suicide scars.
I start to cry to the fact that I will have these scars for a life time.
I grab my razor put it up to my wrist
And I start to cut.
I start to cut them.
Suicide cuts all over again.
But I guess this will be me forever
Making them ugly suicide cuts.
Analysis:
Denotative Meaning:
 The denotative meaning of this poem is all about a person who has scars
because of self-harm. It’s all about someone who’s wondering what happened
to her/him and why did he/she end up having those scars on her body.
However, she/he realizes that it’s because of when her/his world was crashing
down and maybe she/he hurts himself/herself because of that. And she’s/he’s
going to do it again and again because she/he thinks that she/he will be like
that forever.

Connotative Meaning:
 I think, the connotative meaning of this poem is that, the writer is used to do
self-harm every time that she’s feeling depressed. In the second sentence,
‘Wondering what happened to the girl I used to be’ we can see that the
writer is questioning what happened and why did she turn into what she is now.
In the poem, we can feel that the writer is confused as to why she’s doing
things such as harming herself. In life, there are really people who cannot stop
hurting themselves physically especially when the pain is unbearable already.
