CHAPTER 1: SELECT MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION RATIOS

1. SELECT MOTOR
We use formula (3.1) [1] for calculating the power of the chain conveyor:
Fv 7840 × 0.84
Pchain = = =6.5856 ( kW )
1000 1000
where:
F ( N ) – Tangential force on conveyor chain.
v ( m/ s ) – Tangential velocity on conveyor chain.

We select efficiency of transmission drives based on Table 3.3 [1]:

η gr=0.96 – Efficiency of 1-stage helical gear drive.
ηbt =0.94 – Efficiency of V-belt drive.
η cg=0.98 – Efficiency of flexible coupling.
ηbg =0.99 – Efficiency of bearings.

In order to calculate the required power of motor, we use formula (3.3) [1]:
P chain Pchain 6.5856
Pneed = = = =7.6748 ( kW )
ηsystem ηgr ηbt η cg ηbg 0.96 × 0.94 × 0.98× 0.993
3

Using Table 3.1 [1] and formula (3.5) [1], we choose motor with power
Pmotor =11 ( kW ) ≥ Pneed . Additionally, we select speed of motor n motor=1460 ( rpm ) due to the
recommendation from page 56 [1].

2. SELECT TRANSMISSION RATIOS

The speed of the driving sprockets in rpm can be achieved from formula (2.17) [3]:
60000 v 60000 × 0.84
n sprocket = = =70 ( rpm )
pz 9× 80
where:
v ( m/ s ) – Tangential velocity on conveyor chain.
p ( mm ) – Pitch of conveyor chain.
z (teeth ) – Number of teeth of the drive conveyor sprocket.

The transmission ratio of the whole system:

nmotor 1460
u system= = =20.8571
n sprocket 70

We choose transmission ratio of helical gear drive to be u gr=5 using Series 1 page 59 [1].
Thus, the ratio of the V-belt drive will be ubt =4.1714 so that it falls into the recommended range
in Table 3.2 [1].

6
The power and the torque of each shaft are calculated by using formula (3.3) and (3.13) [1]:
Power of shaft I:
P I =Pmotor η bt ηbg=11×0.94 ×0.99=10.237 ( kW )
Power of shaft II:
2 2
P II =P I ηgr ηbg ηcg =10.237 ×0.96 × 0.99 × 0.98=9.4389 ( kW )
Torque of motor shaft:
9550 Pmotor 9550× 11
T motor= = =71.952 ( Nm )
nmotor 1460
Torque of shaft I:
9550 P I 9550× 10.237
T I= = =279.32 ( Nm )
nI 350
Torque of shaft II:
9550 PI I 9550× 9.4389
T I I= = =1287.7 ( Nm )
nI I 70
